(But pardoning Donald _before_ he gets indicted and tried and convicted, WOULD be a mistake in my view. That’s another thread, maybe.)

Works for me. Also the suggestion made elsewhere that commutation of sentence makes more sense than an outright pardon. [see below]

> WRT him pulling an _ **Après nous, le déluge** _ act on January 19, I’m confident his lame duck cabinet would be clearheaded enough to play the 25th Amendment card.

I don’t know. Trump’s family may already have made deals with enough cabinet members to ensure that they won’t go 25th. (I’m thinking of deals such as lucrative federal contracts, out of which there could be a lot of money to be made before a Biden Administration could cancel or contest them.)

I don’t trust any of Trump’s cabinet. They all seem pretty fully corrupt. My guess is that we must look for protection elsewhere.

> [@carlb](#):
>
> _ **If** _ there is to be any leniency regarding Trump and Federal crimes of which he might be convicted, I would hope for a commutation of sentence rather than an outright pardon. While I do understand the reasoning behind the decision, I still believe one of the biggest mistakes of the late 20th Century was Ford’s pardon of Nixon. It set the stage for beliefs and practices in which Presidents really do seem to be above the law, and has led, IMHO to too many actions for which Presidents suffered no real consequences ( **would Iran-Contra have happened had there been the example of a convicted Nixon in recent memory**?).
>
> Enough with, “moving on for the good of the country.” How about we hold powerful people to account for their corruption for the good of the country?

My bolding; I do think that’s a fair point, and agree with this post.

Trump the big flapping mouth has been the cause of a new bit of “sorry that THIS is now fucking necessary”: muting of the microphones at Presidential debates. Thanks, Trump you fucking petulant child.

“WASHINGTON ([NewsNation Now](https://newsnationnow.com)) – The Commission on [Presidential Debates](https://www.newsnationnow.com/politics/2020-debates/) has adopted new rules to mute microphones to allow President Donald Trump and Democratic Nominee Joe Biden 2 minutes of uninterrupted time per segment.
President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will have their microphones cut off in Thursday’s debate while their rival delivers their opening two-minute answer to each of the debate topics.”

I cannot see Trump agreeing to participate in the debate if there’s the chance that his mic could be muted in mid-rant.

I love that this is an official statement from the President of the United States

"“President Trump is committed to debating Joe Biden regardless of last minute rule changes from the biased commission in their latest attempt to provide advantage to their favored candidate. This was supposed to be the foreign policy debate, so the President still looks forward to forcing Biden to answer the number one relevant question of whether he’s been compromised by the Communist Party of China. Why did Biden allow his son Hunter to sell access to him while he was vice president, and why were there Chinese payment arrangements for Joe himself worked out by Hunter and his sketchy partners? If the media won’t ask Joe Biden these questions, the President will, and there will be no escape for Biden.”

I reckon my 16 year old could write a better statement than that during the 15 minutes they are given to prepare for a debate opening statement

> [@Elendil\_s\_Heir](#):
>
> _Wow_ , she’s harsh… even insulting (even if he deserves it). Why would any politician agree to be interviewed by her?

Because if you hide from tough interviewers, it makes you look weak. And often, the subjects believe themselves capable of handling the situation, even if it doesn’t quite work out that way.

Consider also this famous interview between BBC Newsnight anchor Jeremy Paxman and Home Secretary Michael Howard:

[![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/IqU77I40mS0/maxresdefault.jpg "The famous Paxman-Michael Howard interview - Newsnight archives (1997)") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqU77I40mS0)

Also bear in mind that in parliamentary systems, having to defend one’s position against opposition questioning is part of the daily job, so getting tough questioning from others is not as offputting as it appears in America where there isn’t that constant testing of one’s ability to stand up to the same level of public scrutiny.

>
> Career federal employees whose work involves making policy would no longer be hired under competitive procedures.

> President Trump this week fired his biggest broadside yet against the federal bureaucracy by issuing an [executive order](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-creating-schedule-f-excepted-service/) that would remove job security from an estimated tens of thousands of civil servants and dramatically remake the government.
>
> The directive, issued late Wednesday, strips long-held civil service protections from employees whose work involves policymaking, allowing them to be dismissed with little cause or recourse, much like the political appointees who come and go with each administration.
>
> Federal scientists, attorneys, regulators, public health experts and many others in senior roles would lose rights to due process and in some cases, union representation, at agencies across the government. The White House declined to say how many jobs would be swept into a class of employees with fewer civil service rights, but civil service experts and union leaders estimated anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands in a workforce of 2.1 million.
>
> It would be a profound reimagining of the career workforce, but one that may end up as a statement of purpose rather than anything else. The order fast-tracks a process that gives agencies until Jan. 19 to review potentially affected jobs. That’s a day before the next presidential inauguration. An administration under Democratic nominee Joe Biden would be unlikely to allow the changes to proceed.
>
> Still, the order, coming less than two weeks before the election, represents a stunning effort to reshape large parts of the nonpartisan government, which is supposed to serve as a cadre of subject-matter experts for every administration.
>
> “President Trump is delivering on his promise to make Washington accountable again to the citizens it’s meant to serve,” Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said in a statement. “This much-needed reform will increase accountability in essential policymaking positions within the government.”
>
> **Critics said the latest effort, while not affecting a majority of the government, would upend the foundation of the career workforce by imposing political loyalty tests.**
>
> “I am calling this a declaration of war on the civil service,” said Richard Loeb, senior policy counsel for the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing federal workers.
