There is zero incentive for DeSantis to engage Trump at this point. The way that DeSantis wins is if he steals away the base from Trump in a relatively seamless transition as his star rises and Trump’s star falls. Trump is trying to force a division to cut off DeSantis from this base right from the start. If DeSantis responds in kind he gives Trump what he wants. If he bides his time Trump looks more and more petty and desperate and DeSantis appears as the strong one. ---
