I think he’s supposed to be a coach. Many football coaches wear baseball caps on the sidelines. Just speculating though. He certainly isn’t going to wear a helmet and obscure that wonderful, healthy glowing orange face of his. ---

I assume the tradition goes back to when managers also tended to be players.
