I was thinking the same thing, I think that’s literally the case. She’s the daughter of Punjabi immigrants, though she herself was born in South Carolina. She goes by Nikki (and has for most of her life, since childhood), but that’s technically her middle name; her full name at birth was Nimrata Nikki Randhawa. Nikki is a Punjabi name that bears a superficial resemblance to the American “Nicky”. (Though I’m sure it helped when she pursued politics as a Republican.) ---
