Important question: Can the purchasers of these Bibles even understand the King James version? All those “thees” and “thous” and “haths,” and all the “begats.” The Revised Standard Version is tough enough but still understandable today, and easier versions in more modern English are available, so why is Trump hawking the King James? I love the King James version myself, but I’ve studied it, and not just in Sunday school Bible classes when I was a child. You don’t just pick it up and read it like it was a Stephen King or Danielle Steele novel. You have to get used to the language. It’s more Shakespearean English than it is the English that we speak today. If you hated Shakespeare in high school English Lit, you would hate the King James. I suppose the question is moot, as the Trump Bible purchasers will likely never read the Bible part of the book. They’d be more interested in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to “God Bless the USA.” (See Note.) After all, as I mentioned upthread, if all they want is a Bible, the Gideons will give them one for free. Any version they want. That last part is not too far off, historically. The Church was concerned at the idea of mass printing. Why, just anybody could then have a copy in their local language and might be tempted to actually read it! There’s always been a definite whiff of woke/liberal/PC/Reformative/whatever thought at the idea of actually making the Bible more accessible to its intended audience. ---

There are a number of people who think that the KJV is the only official version. Maybe they like all the thees and thous, I don’t know. Seems that if you want to reach the real far out radical right Christians then the KJV is your best bet. ---

I am atheist, but I think the KJV is my favourite. At school, we had the insipid 'Good News" version. I like the smiting and destruction the KJV espouses. Well written literature is better than the Cliffs Notes version, even though it is all bullshit. The Gideons only hand out the New Testament, they seem to ignore all the smiting and destruction in the Old Testament. Maybe they are a little prudish, the Song of Solomon is basically soft porn. ---
