Then they _are_ deplorable, full stop. I could understand people voting for Trump in 2016. He is, after all, a consummate con-man. After four years’ experience with him if you’re paying the slightest bit of attention, in 2020 not so much. After January 6th and its fallout where you have to be living under a rock to avoid the news I have no patience, pity, or understanding at all. ---

While I realize I can’t just ignore 70,000,000 of my fellow Americans, I’m pretty much done with their nonsense. My mother is a major MAGA supporter and it’s strained our relationship because I can’t help but call out the baloney when I see it. My sister and her husband are MAGA supporters but we’ve all wisely decided to avoid politics. One of the more difficult things I’ve found when talking to MAGAts is that I can’t tell if their beliefs are genuine. They’re so far outside of reality that I don’t know if they actually believe what Trump’s saying or they just go along with it to own the Libs or for some other reason. ---

Trump and his crew have not only made that okay, they’ve made it a source of delicious and delightful Righteousness and Patriotism and Honor. _Your feelings that those icky inferiors need to be put in their place are RIGHT AND GOOD!!1!!!11!_ For those who are dismayed when their Inferiors–non-whites, females, gays, etc.–fail to bow and scrape and treat them with reverence–Trump has the solution. I’ve posted this before but it’s still an interesting take: [This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. But that misses the point entirely. What’s truly shocking about reading the book today is how well Thompson foresaw the retaliatory, right-wing politics that now goes by the name of Trumpism. After following the motorcycle guys around for months, Thompson concluded that the most striking thing about them was not their hedonism but their “ethic of total retaliation” against a technologically advanced and economically changing America in which they felt they’d been counted out and left behind. Thompson saw the appeal of that retaliatory ethic. He claimed that a small part of every human being longs to burn it all down, especially when faced with great and impersonal powers that seem hostile to your very existence. In the United States, a place of ever greater and more impersonal powers, the ethic of total retaliation was likely to catch on. Remember what Trump said: “I am your retribution.” ---
