Charleroi had a population of 4,324 in 2022, according to the most recent census estimates. I read the article before I posted (good practice, in general). Joe Manning is the borough manager, whose quote supports my interpretation. In this case, it’s most likely poor reporting by _The New Republic_. ---

If that’s accurate, the population went from 216 to 4,324 in just a few years, with 4,108 of them being Haitian immigrants. Sounds wildly implausible to me, but if true I can see where the 200 or so original inhabitants might feel overwhelmed – regardless of the skin color, ethnicity or origin of the new arrivals. ---

It can’t be accurate. Where would they sleep? How could the local utilities possibly keep up? From what I gather, it is a 2000% increase in Haitian immigrants, not in the overall population of the town, which is much more plausible. Going from 10 to 300 (or 20 to 600 or whatever) over a couple years is much more plausible than the population of the entire town growing from 150 to 4500. ---

Charleroi is about to lose its biggest employer, which is, of course, its priority right now.
