I am glad we don’t have such inanity at my work. There is one person in particular who’s nickname is what everyone calls him, which is why it was the best way to look him up in outlook since hardly no one knew his actual birth name. And this was not someone with a different identity at birth, but just a nickname he has had all his life. I wonder what the Jim’s (William), Sacha’s (Alexander) and Dick’s (William) that work in the government think. How are you supposed to know what they like to be called? `//i\\` ---

You are incorrect. in the US the SS# is used as a personal identifier in a wide variety of contexts and is one of the most valuable in terms of identity theft. ---

Stealing someone’s SSN can result in an identity being stolen and used for all sorts of nefarious pecuniary purposes by thieves. This is the reason that protection of SSNs is generally very tight in the U.S. Many institutions will allow you to confirm your identity after opening an account by just citing the last four digits of the nine-digit SSN; this is intended to protect the full number from possible theft. Of course, the DOGE morons now have access to all of our sensitive data; I suspect this won’t be the last time something like this happens. ---

For our foreign posters, it’s probably worth clarifying that a SSN is not formal identification in the strictest legal sense. Your SS card alone would not be sufficient to identify you as a particular person for any dealings with the federal government. But SSN is a de facto personal identifier accepted or even needed in many contexts to verify personal identity. So having it could be used to pose as another person to a bank or business or online and certainly could be abused to claim the identify of another. When SSNs were first given out, they weren’t intended to become personal identifiers. But, since there was no national registry of citizens and since just about everybody has a SSN (excepting perhaps a few very, very old people on the margins of society), of course they became de facto identification numbers. It’s one of those quirks of the US that don’t make a lot of sense to us, either. ---

But by the 1960s things had evolved as the other posters have mentioned, where the first thing one was asked when trying to open an account with anything larger than the corner store was “What’s your SSN?” ---

When dealing with any number of financial institutions, the most common way they confirm who I am is to ask for at least part of my SSN. It’s scary for that to get out. ---

I had a scammer apply for a $30,000 loan from the Small Business Administration using my birthdate and Social Security number. I found out in a matter of hours when the SBA pulled my credit rating, and my ID protection flagged it. My credit reports are all locked now. ---

Sorry to hear that, but this is what all those Trump doxxed in the “unredacted” release of JFK documents will be facing—because what was released was NOT just their SocSec numbers but also their dates of birth and also their cities of birth.
