Next up: “Kindly do the needful.” This came up a lot in correspondence with Indian contractors. I know it’s probably a literal translation and thus perfectly legitimate, but it still falls strangely on Western ears. ---

The first people convicted of treason under the U.S. Constitution participated in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791; it was an uprising but not a war. Likewise Aaron Burr, prosecuted for his western schemes but acquitted in 1807. Certainly the modern practice has been to limit treason prosecutions to wartime or soon after, though. ---
