How I decided to vote for California Prop. 50 in November

Ahh, okay.

Despite heavy pressure from Trump, Indiana GOP backed down on their own redistricting effort and failed to pass it. Looks like Gavin’s tit for tat tactics worked phenomenally.

Do you really think that was the reason? I’m not seeing an obvious connection between what a very blue state did vs. the possibility/likelihood of state legislators being primaried out of office at their next election. Did any of the Indiana GOP speak about this?

eta: I mean, it’s great news that state GOP legislators defied Trump and their governor, and I am wondering where they got the (figurative) testicular fortitude to take that step. I’m just having a hard time seeing why they would care what California did.

further eta: I see that apparently Illinois was threatening to do the same thing California did, turning 3 seats blue to Indiana’s 2 seats turned red. So, California leading by example, I guess.

I heard from a coworker at work just now that Prop 50 was reaffirmed by a judge today. I’m thrilled that California will get to keep the new districts. I’ll look for a cite after work tonight.

Here’s the story:

SCOTUS let Texas do the same thing over the dissent of the three Liberals. There was no known dissent for the California plan.

The difference is that the texas one was race based in some cases, vs the CA one being passed by the electorate and not race based. I hope the texas one gets kicked out later.

For sure and also they started it. Texas claims that race had nothing to do with it but SCOTUS said it’s ok so that’s the end of the line.

No, they didnt. They simply stayed a lower court ruling, saying it stands for the 2026 elections. This allows a better challenge for 2028. So, yeah, it is a temporary win for texas.

Ah, ok. So there’s hope.
