Because Ted once spent Christmas with his Fundamentalist Christian cousins (whose kids had never heard the word ā€œgrinchā€\* before). Sure, there could have been some conversions involved, but it didnā€™t seem very likely under the circumstances. - In the sense of ā€œcuntā€. ---

By the way, the season started with Barney having a crisis at his wedding because he wasnā€™t able to choose between two different ties. Then we find that heā€™s saddled with the Ducky Tie for the year. First, what this shows is that either Barney somehow gets out of the bet (for at least the wedding), or the flash forward is from more than a year in the future. Second, Iā€™m going to guess that the lessons he learns from the Ducky Tie wearing (whatever the heck they may be) will directly translate into his decision on the wedding tie situation. ---

Remember, towards the end, right after Ted leaves to go talk to the bride, Lily says to Barney (paraphrasing:) ā€œYouā€™re going with _that_ tie?ā€ Which might be a subtle way of Lily reminding Barney that no, just because itā€™s his wedding doesnā€™t mean he gets out of the bet. ---

Iā€™m coming around to the Robin is Barneyā€™s bride camp. Iā€™m thinking that Nora will want Barney to wear something other than the Ducky Tie, which (having lost the bet) he wonā€™t. Nora will want to know why (his bet with Marshall). She will then want to know what the stakes of the bet were. I doubt very much that she would be amused that Barney wanted to cop a feel of Lillyā€™s pregnancy boobs while he was desperately trying to win Nora back.
