Astronomy is perhaps the most important science. The careful, meticulous study of the planets and the stars has lead to some of the grandest scientific theories of all time, and still holds the most fundamental mysteries as well.
No amount of money spent on studying astronomy has ever been a waste, IMHO.
Well, I believe it is not a waste when a country is developed enough to do such things. In Brazil, for example, investing in space exploration would be a waste of money because there are other priorities. Our public healthcare sucks, for example.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m glad I don’t have to worry about making sacrifices for the sun to “rise” every morning.
