How is it hurting me, Jayjay?

No, just Tom, as far as i’ve seen, has allowed his pernicious personal views to influence his judgment in Modding.

a) yeah, I agree, it’s a pretty shitty planet
b) I didn’t realize that I was a Moderator. Woo-hoo! I always thought all this nitpicking would finally get noticed by the PTB! I rool!

Because they’re not. And you prove it every time you start one of these anti-religious rants.

badchad and Der Trihs get slapped, not because they are anti-religious, but because they are trolls. Your OP is pretty stupid and self-serving, but it is not trolling. You are not in any danger of being banned, while (I fervently hope) badchad is. But not because he is an atheist, but because he is a jerk who stalks Polycarp around harassing him in the explicitly-expressed hope that he can drive him from the SDMB. And it seems to me that this is exactly the opposite of this goofy notion you propose of a pro-Christian bias on the boards - if there were some fundamentalist Christian who followed a generally respected poster like John Mace around and constantly attacked and nitpicked him, and said quite clearly that he was doing it because he hated libertarians and wanted to silence John, how long do you realistically think he would last?

I mean, come on.

Another reason why badchad should be banned - he encourages this kind of assholery in other Dopers. You (pseudotrition ruber ruber, I mean) didn’t used to be such a rectum. But badchad gets away with it, and it encourages it in others.

Pity.

Merry Christmas, though.

Shodan

Are TOO!

I enjoy this high level of sophisticated debate. I hope I can hold up my end.

If you want to ignore the entire rest of my post, then I would say your hopes are in vain.

Shodan

It is possible that Der Trihs has gotten some unwanted attention from the staff because of his vehemence (although I do not recall that happening), but he is not a troll and I see no reason to label him as such. Both the named posters portray themselves as fundy atheists, but Der Trihs is not a troll.

Well, I wouldn’t know about the non-public attention Der Trihs has received from the mods, but you are probably right - “troll” was the wrong term for our backwards anarchist. “Raving fundamentalist atheist” might be more appropriate.

As I say, I have no idea how anyone is regarded by the mods, apart from whatever public warnings I notice (although I fervently hope badchad is hovering dangerously on the edge), but my point as to the relative difference in board treatment between a jerk like badchad and an excessively enthusiastic anti-religious ranter like prr stands.

And Merry Christmas again.

Shodan

Where is South Bay? It must be a lot more tolerant than the southeastern US that I grew up in, because I’ve been 1), hit with a pool cue, 2), sprayed in the face with near-boiling water, and 3) had a knife held to my throat for claiming to be atheist.

Well, you’re not supposed to announce it in the middle of Mass!

I regret and resent having to share my atheism with twerps.

Are you sure it was near-boiling and not just…oh, I don’t know…

Holy?
(d&r)

Near San Jose. But I’ve lived in lots of different states and haven’t had any problem with it. Ever. I don’t go around advertising it, but if anyone asks I always say I don’t have any religious beliefs at all.

A common exchange among young guys who just met in my hometown:

Guy: “Are you a Christian?”

Me: “Yes” (I was until I was 15 or 16)

Guy: “Good, because if you said no I was gonna kick your ass!”

Their parents obviously aren’t so openly violent about it but where do you think they got it from?

San Jose is A LOT more liberal and less Christian than most of the country.

And that was just his immediate family at a Christmas dinner!!!

The holy water joke was a lot funnier

Actually #1 was by a grown woman (probably 35 or 40) at a house party. I just left because I didn’t want to fight every guy she came with. #2 and #3 both happened at work, different jobs. Anyone want to guess why the assailants weren’t fired or reprimanded in any way? (Hint: I didn’t know any other atheists at the time.)

I don’t understand. Why didn’t you simply file a civil rights violation suit, or maybe some kind of hate-crimes act kind of thing? Surely any judge worth his salt would have seen how blatantly your right to hold your own beliefs were clearly being violated by these bigoted brutes? Why not simply have them put behind bars for years and years and years to come?

Ah, wouldn’t that be pretty?

Just because I keep my faith quiet, I have been accused of being a devil worshiper, of following him who has horns, of being a tempter, and a servant of the great beast.

That’s in the last month, by a very nice woman who happens to follow a charismatic church.

Different time, different place. It just wasn’t something I would’ve considered at the time.

When the water got sprayed in my face I was washing dishes at a restaurant I used to work at for a couples nights as a favor. The guy I was working with kept talking about Jesus and being really beligerant about it and I kept avoiding the topic. Eventually he got over zealous and got up in my face and started shouting the whole HAVE YOU GIVEN YOUR LIFE AND SOUL OVER TO JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR bit, I said no, and he pushed me and grabbed the sprayer and sprayed it in my face. Someone broke us up before I could do anything back and I just let it go. I think he was in special classes in high school.

The knife incident was actually with a somewhat friend. We were working at a pizza shop and we were the only ones there one morning, chopping vegetables. He kept talking about god and asking me about it, and I kept dodging the questions like I’ve learned to do, but his questions kept getting more and more direct and somehow it finally came out that I didn’t believe in god and he held his knife up to my throat and said YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE I LOVE!!! I didn’t talk to him for about 4 years after that but I’ve talked to him since and neither one of us mentioned it.

I quit that job soon afterwards and moved across the country a few months later. Things like that just happened in that town. A lot of dopers who grew up in blue states or even big cities in red states don’t seem to know what it’s like to grow up in an ultraconservative rural area in a red state. (Cue some liberal doper who grew up in a rural town in a red state and didn’t have any problems and thinks that negates my experience.)

I was being disingenuous, Cisco.

Somehow, I don’t see a southern judge applying hate crime laws to the protection of the right to be an atheist. I’m imagining more like, “Yeah, you said you were an atheist, you gotten beaten to within a inch of your life, you got a problem wth that? Next case!”

Oh I could tell you stories about trying to report anything to the police in that town if you’re young or in any minority group, atheism be damned.
