I get emails every so often throughout the year. If my Basque were up to the task I’d probably take a shot at answering them… then again if word gets around I’d be up to my neck in e-mails.

> Well sure, that makes sense. I recall going to the Christkindlmarkt in Munich ages ago, but I did not realize that little baby Jesus was actually doing all the legwork in Germany. Thanks.

This is funny to read. Because Kindl= small child is neutral in German, not male, and because the Nativity scenes have an undetermined bundle in a blanket (or a small boy with a halo), the Christkindl is often considered seperate from Jesus, not the Baby Jesus.
It doesn’t help that, as usual\*, the Christkindl is represented in Person by [young blond women in white nightdresses with golden wings](http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Christkindlesmarkt_prolog_2009.jpg&filetimestamp=20091129122132)…

As for the lifting itself, that’s done by the companions, Knecht Ruprecht and others in South Germany + Austria.

See the famous poem by Theodor Storm, [Knecht Ruprecht](http://gutenberg.spiegel.de/?id=5&xid=2786&kapitel=217&cHash=6755b23f75ruprecht#gb_found):

> [@](#):
>
> Von drauß’ vom Walde komm ich her;
> Ich muß euch sagen, es weihnachtet sehr!
> Allüberall auf den Tannenspitzen
> Sah ich goldene Lichtlein sitzen;
> Und droben aus dem Himmelstor
> Sah mit großen Augen das Christkind hervor;
> Und wie ich so strolcht’ durch den finstern Tann,
> Da rief’s mich mit heller Stimme an:
> »Knecht Ruprecht«, rief es, »alter Gesell,
> Hebe die Beine und spute dich schnell!
>
> From out of the forest I come,
> I have to tell you, it’s christmasing very much!
> All over the fir tree tips
> I saw golden lights sitting;
> and from above through the Heaven’s gate
> the christchild looked with big eyes;
> And as I was strolling through the dark fir,
> it called to me with bright voice
> “Knecht Ruprecht,” it called, "old chum,
> lift your feet and hurry up!

- The [Münchner Kindl](http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCnchner_Kindl)(munich child) is another case of this transformation. Originally, the coat of arms of the city of Munich shows a monk in his garb. Over time, this became a small child, who is now represented during the Oktoberfest procession by a [young, usually blond, women](http://www.tz-online.de/aktuelles/muenchen/muenchner-kindl-maria-tz-805409.html)riding on a horse.
