# How is there a sand shortage in the world?

Honolulu’s famous Waikiki beach is artificial. Sand has to be trucked or pumped in regularly to keep the continually-eroding beach presentable. The imported sand currently comes from various points around the island (Oahu), but years ago, it was being imported from California and possibly Australia.
