The effort to save Sears Canada’s operations has failed. On Tuesday the Canadian department store chain said it would seek court approval to liquidate all of its remaining stores and assets, according to a company press release.
The company said it expects the court overseeing the bankruptcy to hear a motion around the liquidation plan on Friday. Liquidation sales of store inventory will likely begin no earlier than Oct. 19 and would take 10 to 14 weeks, according to the retailer.

While Sears currently only has only a 12% ownership in Sears Canada, this is suggestive of what will happen to Sears in the not too distant future.

Sears Holdings is closing an additional 103 stores around the country, as it struggles to win over customers who are increasingly shopping online.

The beleaguered retailer on Thursday said it will close 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores by early April. The company has shuttered more than 400 locations in the past year, leaving it with about 875 stores.
