Just curious, over a discussion I saw on TV - with the award or a bond posted, the appeal goes forward. If the appeal is denied, all appeals are exhausted, does the court automatically turn the money held in escrow to the winner? Giving the money back to the loser and then telling the winner “you can go after him and try to collect now” would seem to defeat the purpose of posting the amount. Plus, what’s the risk for a bond if in the end the bond company does not have to pay the winner?

Yes. Not technically “automatically.” You have to file some stuff. But it does not get released to the defendant until it’s all sorted out.
