I know a couple of longtime Dopers who say (rather smugly) they have ā€œoutgrownā€ the Board, or itā€™s become boring, or they prefer LiveJournal. Me, Iā€™m going to have to cut back simply for time and energy reasons: Iā€™m working ten-hour days, going back to school nights, visiting my mother in her assisted-living home every couple of weekends, writing a book . . . I donā€™t have the time or energy to brush my hair, let alone play on the computer. My social life is dead, and Iā€™m having to explain to friends why I canā€™t meet them for dinner or drinks. ā€œI donā€™t have the time, the money, the energy.ā€ So if my presence fades away, itā€™s not 'cause I donā€™t like it here . . . ---

I think a lot of people feel that way after approaching the boards as a cohesive community or chatroom. Iā€™ve always held the boards more at armā€™s length; reading and utilizing GQ for those quirky little questions in life, GD when I want to talk about a big current event or profound idea Iā€™ve had, the pit when I occasionally want to vent or see whatā€™s pissing people off, and - probably most of all since it has opened - the Cafe when I want to discuss media that none of my real-life friends are interested in. This way Iā€™ve stayed fairly consistent here for almost 5 years without really overdoing it or feeling burnt out. I know a lot of people _just enough_ to smirk at inside jokes and jabs, but no one really enough to be emotionally involved in any of the ridiculous drama that goes on (often behind-the-scenes) around here. People that approach the boards with an idea that they need to ā€œfit-inā€ or be ā€œpopularā€ are almost invariably going to crash-and-burn. ---

I renewed my membership because I had some extra cash for Xmas, and I was having some health problems and had to take a month or so off from a PT job (looking for a new one now) so I had time to post. But when I start working outside my home again in another 2-3 weeks, I imagine it will drop off considerably. Iā€™m working on two books right now among a huge pile of other stuff, and when Iā€™m working in and out of home it just takes too much out of me, and I donā€™t have the extra time. I probably wonā€™t renew my membership next winter unless I really feel like I want to stay, and Iā€™m actually in a position where I donā€™t have to work two jobs to make ends meet. It all depends on how things go. Iā€™ve been a bit disappointed with a few things Iā€™ve seen since I rejoined, to be honest. ---

Depends. If I find another message board thatā€™s more interesting and isnā€™t plagued with trolls and morons, I might lose interest. But that seems unlikely. So, assuming we get to stay charter members at a modest annual membership chargeā€¦probably for a while (if off and on). šŸ˜ƒ ---

I donā€™t use my computer much at home, so I would probably all but stop posting if I lost the ability to post from an office. Itā€™s hard to say whether I would stop completely. If the activity dropped off I would stop posting. Itā€™s no fun posting on inactive boards. When message board technology merges with MMRPG technology, that will be cool. Iā€™d come back or stay for that. ---

I see my self here for the long haul or at least until my welfare cheques wonā€™t cover the subscription fee. I suppose that if there were a dramatic drop in quality Iā€™d consider leaving, but there has been no indication of that. ---
