Going back to the question of training, this link has a graph of the training hours comparing US, British and German pilots over the course of the year. You have to scroll down, but you can see that Luftwaffe requirements where actually greater than British up until summer of '42, but dropped off below. After June '44 it was drastically less and contributed to the viscous cycle of plane losses, which is outlined in another graph on the same page.
