How long would Charlie Kirk have lasted here?

We will have to agree to disagree on whether turning a blind eye to ignorance and intolerance itself represents being “far more tolerant.”

I would disagree that the board ever turned a blind eye to ignorance, however if what you say is true, it does then appear the boards mission of fighting ignorance is working.

One LGBT post and CK would have been history.

No, he’d have gotten a warning for his first LGBT post. Or for his first racist post.

Then he’d have had to choose if he wanted to stay anyway. If he had chosen to stay, i believe he could have done so. (And been the subject of many pit threads.) But my guess is that he would have “self deported”. Because i think he was mostly interested in pushing racism, homophobia, and similar political agendas, and would not have valued any other aspect of the board. If he left, he’d probably have complained about freedom of speech on his way out.

Like I said, agree to disagree. From my perspective, the board took far too long (in a collective sense) to recognize that the transphobes were never debating in good faith and instead were hunting for just the right magical combination of rhetorical tricks that would unlock understanding and acceptance of their bigotry, and that the board’s so-called “tolerance” of the transphobes’ shenanigans was harming and alienating our trans members and their allies. Thankfully, this was finally corrected.

To keep this tied to the OP, that’s the kind of argumentative sandbox a shithead like CK loves to exploit. So I think he would have survived — not thrived, exactly, but would have been under no threat of banning — under the old rules, but would have been largely stymied under the new rules, resulting in his rapid departure, whether voluntary or otherwise.

That said, I also agree with the points raised by others that CK wouldn’t have bothered trying to engage in an online text-based setting like this. His fallacy-ridden debate techniques relied on quick subject-switching and the difficulty of live fact-checking. Given his very specific MO and the objectives he was pursuing, he would have taken one look at this conversational environment and moved on.

He was a smart guy who was good at arguing, and would not have been banned unless he wanted to be. I think he could have stayed as long as he chose to, but to do so he would have held back his real views on many subjects, which is probably why he wouldn’t have wanted to stay.

Wouldn’t have lasted for long on the Dope.

Well, let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie
A nasty little bigot was he
Hated everybody but his far-right buddies
Went to play on the SDMB

I put “other” because it depends on how his in-person demeanor translates to typed messages.
He relied a lot on bad-faith deflections and citing bad data. So how would he respond when he gets called on that stuff, or even gets a mod warning?

Perhaps CK was here on the Dope, in a lurking, read-only capacity, learning the viewpoints of smart folks and figuring out how to counter those points with his fast-talking, false-data-driven, argumentative style of debate.

Lol! come on, I enjoy the discourse here, but this is no such thing

Perhaps I was hasty. I’ll give him 5 LGPT exchanges with the mods to get a thread ban and maybe a dozen more to wear out his welcome and get bounced.

Lesbian Generative Pre-trained Transformer?

That sounds about right.

He was good at “playing by the rules”, and i think if he’d had any interest in posting here within the rules, he could have done so, fwiw. But i don’t think he’d have wanted to. I think he devoted his life to elevating straight white men above everyone else, and if he couldn’t play that game, he’d leave.

Make $407K/year telling ignoramuses what they want to hear VS at best a SDAB coffee mug while catching warnings and structured counter arguments. Decisions, decisions.

That seems very low for what Kirk was doing. I see that number comes from 2021? It’s undoubtedly much higher in 2024 and 2025.

He would have left due to debate, but not real debate therefore I picked other. He would have been frustrated with the couple of members here that are far-left and participate in dishonest debate because his style was to ask questions that make your position look idiotic and some here just ghost the thread when their position is caught out like that.

Even trying to steel man him the best anyone can say is he was Just Asking Questions™

Well, they’ve at least made it harder to do. Some posters are still working that angle nonetheless.

Except that he never engaged in “real debate” himself, and his “questions that make your position look idiotic” would have fallen apart with the slightest actual scrutiny.

And then he would have run off to ATMB to whine about how badly conservatives are persecuted on this messageboard.

Yes but engaging in that debate would not have made him leave. He’d be looking to engage with someone on SD with extremely progressive (in his words “woke”) views.

Exactly. But he would still be here borderline trolling.

As we are not in the Pit, I chose to leave that can of worms unopened. The point is that the rule framework has evolved, making that kind of shitheadery harder to pull off.
