If there were air or some other sound-carrying medium in space, how loud would the sun be? Would we be able to hear it on Earth?

If you suppose some sound conducive medium you would have to identify a mechanism of interaction with that medium to produce the sound if you are even going to start to guess the amount of that sound. You would also have to establish the nature of the medium as far as attenuation etc.

Assuming we could hear it since the sun is so energetic, I expect sonar would be as important a tool as vision to most life.

It’s so loud that we can [_see_ it from earth](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helioseismology).

Though of course, the waves we observe much lower frequency than our ears could detect. I don’t think anybody knows how much power is in higher frequencies.
