How Many Birds Have You Killed With Your Car?

Only one, a barn swallow on Route 13 in Maryland-he was swooping low with some of his buddies, and hit the upper right corner of my windshield before I had a chance to do a single thing (and like others above like chela I will slow down in a heartbeat if I see or sense an animal ahead). About broke my heart.

No birds, mate. But a coupla bloody grannies wot got their foot caught in me boot got dragged through the streets back in Blighty.

Did you ever cook roadkill? They’re delicious.

I only recall ever hitting one bird: a male pheasant, which came flapping across the entrance ramp I was on, about six months after I got my driver’s license. When I saw him, I slowed down, but not enough – my fender clipped him (another six inches and he would have been safe), and he cartwheeled into the weeds on the side of the road.

I haven’t a freaking clue, but right when I started driving (when I was still on my learner’s permit and 15), I remember driving through Montana or Wyoming where there were a bunch of birds feasting on something in the middle of the highway, and at least two of them did not fly away in time.

But, honestly, that’s the last I remember actually hitting birds with a car. I remember being surprised, as they always get out of the way in the nick of time. That would have been almost 23 years ago.

I said 5 or more, but I don’t really know because I don’t stop and get out to perform a avicide investigation. I don’t care either, I don’t aim for birds, they pretty much have to aim for my car to get clobbered.

Of course we all share in the deaths of millions of birds indirectly from driving cars as a result of pollution and destruction of habitat.

I’m stunned at these tales of senseless slaughter!!

Seriously, I am surprised – I once hit a dog, and that’s the only fatality from my years of driving – the birds just seem to get out of the way.

I’ve killed one: a crow. It cracked the grille a little and left a bunch of feathers wedged in. There was some blood splatter, too.

I had a kamikaze cardinal fly straight into my windshield. I stopped and picked him up, and he lived a few minutes but died. I’ve hit three bunnies. Nothing else, even though I drive through country roads every day.

I hit a bird once, about 30 years ago, and just two weeks ago I saw a bird get run over. It was strolling across a 4-lane road, and the driver tried to avoid it, but couldn’t. It was an unusual-looking bird, kind of like a large dove with a longer neck.

I believe I’ve hit two pigeons. The first was in an underground parking garage. It didn’t get out of the way, and I was absolutely sure it would. Oops. The second was a very derelict looking pigeon in the underpass right before the Grassy Knoll in Dallas. He may have been clipped by a previous car, and he walked right under my wheel.

One. It was flying across the street, and bounced off my hood. I saw it tumble into the street behind me.

I hit some huge black bird once when I was on the freeway. It seemed like it took up the whole windshield, scared the shit out of me. That was years ago. Then a few days ago some little thing flew out of the bushes right into my car and left a bloody mess, poor thing. At least I’ve never hit a deer or anyone’s pet–that would just kill me.

I hit what I believe was a mockingbird a few years ago. It wasn’t a clean kill; he was still flapping as I went by. But I think its wing was certainly broken, and can’t have lived long.

Last year a hit a monarch butterfly, and felt terrible about it. I know it’s just a bug, but their numbers are way, way down, to the point where the species could well be in trouble.

There are two that I’m sure of, but I voted 3 because I figured there must have been another at some point.

I was driving on a dusty 2-lane highway between Richland, WA and the Gorge Amphitheater - the road that cuts through the Hanford nuke reservation heading towards Vantage. It was early morning and a small bird flew right into our path and WHACK. My girlfriend at the time, who is a huge animal lover, was horrified and felt awful. She was just starting to get over it when WHACK, another bird within about 5 minutes of the first.

I haven’t killed any but my mom got a pheasant once. The worst part was that it split a bit on impact and its innards actually got caught on one of the windshield wipers. Not knowing what to do and being less gutsy than she is now, my mom drove 15 miles to my dad’s work to have him remove it. And of course she was quite pregnant with me at the time so when my dad got the page “Mr. Stickler, your wife is at the front desk.” he panicked suitably. But the bird was removed and all was well until my dad thoughtlessly made spaghetti for dinner that night.

One that I know of. I hit a robin one morning on my way to work a couple of years ago. It flew down out of a tree and across the road right in front of me, and I heard it hit my bumper. When I got to work there were still feathers stuck to the bumper. :frowning: This was a couple of days before the first day of Spring, and I told my co-workers if Spring didn’t show up it was my fault.

I know they’re not birds, but my dad hit a bat one night on our way home from a hockey game. It hit the windshield of his car and went up and over the car. We didn’t stop to look for it, being dark out and all, but I’m pretty sure it got itself killed.

I’m not exactly sure what has changed in the last five years, but apparently now I am become death, the destroyer of wildlife. I haven’t graduated to larger game such as deer, but I suspect it’s only a matter of time. I’ve clipped a few last year, and bounced a few dogs off my bumper as well.

Birds, squirrels, cats, armadillos, opossum… sigh

As far as birds go, probably five.

I’m gathering that most of us (not me) would need to get permits from our driving activity.

I’ve never hit a bird. I hit a freaking curb a month ago and destroyed the front end of my beloved Honda ($2300 to repair), but never any birds, squirrels, dogs or cats. Or people.

This is somewhat odd, because I do drive in an area where birds fly in huge flocks, sometimes near the road.

Two that I know of. I saw them fly into my grill and never saw them come out. Sure enough both were lodged in the grill.

Two different cars too.
