As someone who is interested in neither organised sport or modern television I find that I generally read 4-5 books per week. My preferred media are leatherbound first editions or imprints signed by the author. I mostly read sci fi, although much of what I read is derivative of the ‘big three’ - Asimov, Clarke and Rothman.
53, female, handicapped. I read about half a book a day, sometimes a whole book. I read almost exclusively ebooks as on a really bad body day I can manage to sort of coocoon myself in pillows so I can just hold my droid in front of my face and advance the text with my thumb.
I’m 60. I read 1 or 2 books a week, a fairly wide range of fiction and non-fiction. For the past year, most of my reading has been done in the Kindle app on my iPad Mini. I have bought a few ebooks, but I get most of them from my library.
I read 20-25 books per year. It would be more if I had more time for reading but I tend to read large non-fiction books and only have 30-60 minutes each day to read. My wife reads about 200 books a year. Our 11-year-old daughter probably reads 300 books a year.
I would do little else but read for pleasure if it were up to me. A few years ago, I realized reading was getting squeezed completely out of my life, so I decided to prioritize it. Now I get up extra early in the morning, drive to work, then sit in the parking lot and read until it’s time to go in. It’s the best part of the day!
Last year I read 55 books. Since I started tracking, my best year was 87 (counting audio books).
I’m 25 and I read about 60 books a year, in dead tree form. Whenever I see people talking about reading a book a day, I have to wonder: do you people have jobs? Do you do anything with your free time except read? 'Cause I used to think I was a serious reader, but… apparently not.
It’s hard to say because I usually have a number of books going at the same time. I’ve been reading Anna Karenina for half a year now, and have finished a dozen books in the mean time, but have also started reading The Three Musketeers. I don’t get as much of a chance to read as I’d like, and I read books that are not necessarily page turners… I’d say I get up to 20 or so in a year.
I said 13-30, but that’s a sort of mean over my entire life.
The truth is, there have been entire years when I read few or no books, and others were I read nearly 100. I tend to read in spurts. I read a LOT more since I got my Kindle a few years ago.
So would I. That’s one of the first things I think of when I hear someone say they can’t imagine retiring. “What would I do all day???”
Really? Not long a go I ruthlessly weeded my “To Read” list on goodreads down to 323. I have stacks of books in my house identified as “to be read” with only about a third of them recorded on the goodreads list. What would I do all day? My mom passed on not long ago and in a couple weeks most of her books will come to live with me, and get added to the list. She was retired, and managed to keep up quite a few activities and still read an astonishing number of books.
Inspired by you I am here and now publicly declaring that I am making reading a priority, right now, today.
