It varies state-by-state, but IME, you need paperwork from your employer in order to file. Technically, they’re supposed to pay you until they inform you, but given the bizarre way they’re treating you, I’d say that this may not happen. (Filing a lawsuit against them over this is entirely up to you.)

**Were you laid off?**
Not exactly, my company was “laid off” by our parent company, and so, I’m out of a job
**What industry did you get laid off from?**
Graphic design/advertising
**Have you found work yet?**
Actually still working, end date is mid- January-ish or whenever we wrap up our final ad campaign

**How many Dopers have lost their job since 10/1/08?**

Curious you should choose that date – I received a (modest) salary increase on 08/01/08, and then again on 10/1/08 I was given a promotion and concomitant _second_ increase.

Meanwhile, the falling housing market caused my county to reassess property values, resulting in the property tax escrow portion of our mortgage _decreasing_ – our mortgage bill went down, although only by a smidge, _and_ we received a moderate-sized refund of escrow to boot.

I realize this is an unusual circumstance. If it makes anyone feel any better, I lost a good job in 2002 and spent all my savings – literally burning through the 401K plans and taking the heavy penalty for using them – and had a lien posted on the condo at the moment I finally got full-time employment once again. Said employment was steady, but definitely a step down compared to what I was used to.

This year has been my best year since that debacle. So far, I am doing well by my standards – probably finally recovering from the disaster financially – but, mind you, that’s “by my standards”…it’s frankly probably a lot less money than most adults earn, and we’re in a ridiculous-cost-of-living area.

Still, I feel lucky; the financial world is collapsing around me and I’m getting increases while my mortgage gets lowered.

Anybody else just get [this missive](http://www.tftb.com/cat-essay.html) from their cat(s)?

Forgive me for not noticing sooner; I am, however, the cat around here and have copious responsibilities for which I do not much solicit your attention or aid, either. I surely cannot be expected to pay attention to the minute details of your day-to-day activities, most of which, I must tell you, have always seemed a little … well, let’s say, eccentric. I have not minded any of this, much, except occasionally for show. I have always tried to be genial about our living circumstances.
