'Tis just a flesh wound! Come back and fight like a machine you cowardly man! Monty Python - The Black Knight - YouTube
It just occurred to me that the destructing washer video would be a great trailer for the sequel to Christine. Stephen King wanted us to believe that the soul of the killer Plymouth was still alive, so why not in a Whirlpool?
See: The Mangler.
Looks like they connected the motor directly to an extension cord.
Right. I’ve seen other videos for setups like this, and they always bypass the control electronics. The control panel flapping around was completely superfluous except for the visual effect.
What killed the runaway drum in that video was the drum drive belt grabbing some of the debris off the ground and jumping off the drive shaft.
Yep, centripetal / centrifugal acceleration have the value \omega^2r with r being your distance from the (flattening) clothes and the hub, and omega being your rotation rate. My students have their final exam just next week in which they’d better have this one memorized! Just divide your answer by 9.81 m/s/s to get your answer in g’s.
(Oh, and Coriolis accel. too. That’s of course a whole other thread.)
That’s the dryer. Low gees, and warm enough for a cat. A bit bumpy tho.
I can’t find it but there’s a video of a clothes dryer with a brick in it. And they have put the dryer on a small trampoline and turned it on. For some reason, the almost-alive aspect of the machine jumping around wilder and wilder because of the imbalance just makes me laugh my ass off. Jeez, I wish I could find it. I bet some dopers can do so.
See Post #29 by @mixdenny above in this thread.
Hysterical. That’s what made me think of the other one on the trampoline.
If you youtube search for [weight in washer] or similar terms there are hundreds of these now.
Even adding “trampoline” to that search returns a lot of hits.
There are a lot of people destroying a lot of washers on a lot of trampolines.
