Obviuously, all the Jews killed in the holocaust were civilians but quite a large number of the rest of the 12 million were Russian prisoners of war.

Hussein is, I believe, a reasonably common name in Arabic. Hitler never was. I think that’s important: if some Really Evil Guy turns out to have the last name of Johnson, other people with the last name of Johnson may get stupid jokes for a week or two, but nobody’s going to seriously believe they’re all close relatives of the Really Evil Guy. But, f’r instance, here in Norway, the local Really Evil Guy of WWII bore the last name of Quisling, a name (or at least a spelling) that had been invented only a couple of generations before. The few other Quislings _were_ therefore close relatives, and changed their names quickly to distance themselves from him… except for his widow, who went to her grave claiming her husband’s actions were “misunderstood” :rolleyes:

As I said before Husseinis extremely popular, not just in the Arab world, but in the entire Islamic world, esp. Pakistan. Even though I live in England I know about 4 or 5 people with the surname Hussein.

Being dimly familiar with the above, I was surprised to find a family of Hitlers living in Bridgeport, Connecticut on the 1930 Census. (That’s Roll 255 at the National Archives for those of you interested.) Parental ancestry was noted, but I paid no attention to it until later I found a family of Rommels (parents from Saxony) living just a few blocks away.
I didn’t have the luxury of rolling back to check, but I noticed a whole lot of people with the surname “Hiller” living nearby. I’m certain I spotted at least one “t,” but it occurs to me that the most likely explanation is an errant pen stroke across a double-L.

There are ten listings for people named Hitler in the Social Security Death Index, which records deaths that were reported to the Social Security Administration 1962—present. Eight of those ten Hitlers were from Ohio, and seven of those eight were residing in Circleville at the time of death.
The oldest male in the ten Hitlers was born in 1884, the youngest in 1947.

I checked on [this](http://www.dastelefonbuch.de/NSAPI/Anfrage?AKTION=zeSuchseiteTelefonbuch&SPRACHE=EN) site and there are no Hitlers, 4 Hütlers, 3 Hiedlers and about 30 Hittlers (with listed telephone numbers) in Germany. Don’t know about Austria, though.

I checked ReferenceUSA and I got 11 hits for Hitlers all over America. No Adolfs, though.
RefUSA is a commercial phone book database that my library subscribes to. It’s a little more accurate than Anywho, Yahoo, and the like.

Incidentally, the RefUSA also lists a Hitler Ludwig Cemetary at 1819 Hitler Road in Circleville, OH.

Actually, Hitler’s real grandfather’s identity is pretty much unknown. “Hiedler” was Alois Schicklgruber’s stepfather, who never acknowledged Alois as a son. His brother did attest that Alois was his son years later, mainly so Alois could inherit some of his land.
I wonder if there are many people with the names Schicklgruber or Pözl (Poezl) (Hitler’s mother’s name). They are far more likely to be Adolf’s ‘real’ relatives, but I don’t think those surnames are all too common either.

It’s interesting to note that according to the above link, this guy is 90 years old, and thus got his name back when Adolf Hitler was nothing more than a minor crank in pre-WWI Germany.
