I should think my purpose was clear. I disagree with anyone who would use such an event for political grandstanding, and I disagree with anyone who would blindly applaud such grandstanding just to march in lockstep with the party they support.
Ventura walked out during Rick whatshisface’s “eulogy”, well past the point of him being booed. And Ventura’s a lame duck independent- he’s not running for any other office, he’s not campaiging for anyone else, so what motives do you ascribe to his actions? Publicity?
Indeed. It’s sickening.
An adrenaline pumped urge to whack someone over the head with a folding chair ? Ventura hasn’t exactly established himself as member of the “Miss Manners” set. Grandstanding one’s outrage is pretty common behavior among pro-wrestlers, and Jesse seems to be no exception.
Precisely.
Jesse is a media whore, despite his supposed hatred for anyone in the media. He says NO NO NO! put then whines when he is not center stage.
Reality check: One political speaker, invited by the family to speak because he was Wellstone’s closest friend. Some people in the crowd who booed.
Moderate yourself please. This is the PIT afterall: you’re turning solemn ground into a partisan squabbling ground.
Certainly not by the memorial event.
Just by the one speaker during the event.
Mostly I’ve been disappointed by the fact that folks agreed not to campain for a few days out of respect for Paul Wellstone’s passing, yet all I could do during those few days was wonder at how frequently I was hearing about Mr. Wellstone’s passing and his life and politics.
If this election were not this close, do you really think this would have gotten the amount of press or coverage it has gotten.
Totally ignoring the two speakers (Wellstone’s younger son conveyed the “win this election for my dad’s memory” message at least once in his turn at the microphone) who made campain like talk during this event…
Every local channel? For how many hours?
You can’t buy that sort of coverage.
And I really, really don’t believe that would have happened if Mr. Wellstone were to have died this time last year, or this time next year.
Someone important to a lot of minnesota died in an accident, and a number of politicos have cheapened my memories of his passing. So, to Mr Wellstone and all the other folks who died on that plane, all I can say is rest in peace.
To the folks who decided to take advantage of the press coverage of anything related to Mr. Wellstone’s passing in order to achieve their own ends all i can say is… :wally
Paul Wellstone would have gotten the same coverage whether there was an election or not. he was an honest politician which made him virtually unique in congress. what was the national media supposed to, ignore the story? Only say bad stuff?
A great liberal was eulogized in the press and conservatives just had to suck on it for a few days. Boo fucking hoo.
Speaking as an outsider, the sucking was done entirely by Democrats.
I really don’t see that. I’m not talking about the national media. I don’t believe they would have had any less coverage were this not as close to an election. I’m talking about our local stations.
The only local station who didn’t have the memorial being broadcast was the affialiat who was broadcasting the initial episode of 24. (actually, I’m not sure if the local public television station was showing it or not, I’m guessing not)
Any other time of year I think they might have covered an hour of it on delayed broadcast giving highlights and best moments.
But no… at least two hours of live broadcast, some stations covering the entire thing live. Only prior to an election.
Hey… I thought you were supposed to be the Cynical one?
