It is a common understanding that the books of the “Old Testament” are not “Christian Scripture”, as such.

That’s going to be news to a hell of a lot of Christians I know. Like, all of them.

> It is a common understanding that the books of the “Old Testament” are not “Christian Scripture”, as such.

Common understanding by who?

[Christians regard both the Old and New Testaments together as sacred scripture.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament)

And a few words about the old [“it’s just the Old Testament” cop-out](http://spencerwatch.com/2011/05/22/the-%E2%80%9Cbut-that%E2%80%99s-just-the-old-testament%E2%80%9D-cop-out/).

The fact is that _ **both** _ parts of the Bible are integral to Christianity, the first part laying out the Word of God as fundamental Law in both Christianity and Judaism, and the second part an account of the life of Jesus as the embodiment of that same God.

And neither is the New Testament free of violence, either, it just doesn’t talk about violence for transgressions of God’s Law which is the business of the Old Testament, but rather in terms of prophesies of terrible but justified violence on the occasion of the Second Coming. As [this article](http://www.loonwatch.com/2011/04/jesus-loves-his-enemies-and-then-kills-them-all/) nicely puts it, Jesus loves his enemies, so he’s going to come back and kill them all:
Just as Muhammad’s biography can be divided into a Meccan and Medinan period, so too can Jesus’s lifestory be divided into a First and Second Coming. (Likewise can Moses’ lifestory be divided into pre- and post-Exodus: prior to Exodus, Moses was largely peaceful, but after Exodus, Moses became the leader of the emerging Jewish state–and subsequently engaged in holy wars and even genocide against other nations.) In the First Coming of Christ, only a small segment of society (mostly from the weak and poor) accepted Jesus, whereas the leaders and authorities persecuted him. During this time period, Jesus advised his followers to engage in nonviolent resistance only, perhaps even pacifism. Jesus advised his followers to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” According to the Bible, this didn’t stop his Jewish and Roman persecutors from crucifying him.

Yet, the Second Coming of Christ is a central theological belief of Christianity. When Jesus returns to earth, the gloves will be off: no longer will he practice nonviolence or pacifism. Enemies will be mercilessly killed, not loved. In this manner, Jesus will fulfill the messianic prophecies found in the Bible–both in the Old and New Testaments. To Christians, Jesus is the Messiah (the Greek word “Christ” has the same meaning as the Hebrew word “Messiah”)–the same Messiah that the Jews had been in anticipation of.
One can find some choice examples of these ideas in the New Testament such as the following:
Revelations 19:11-16: And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Psalm 137:8-9: O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. [_Happy is the one who pays you back for what you have done to us._] Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. [_Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against a rock._]

Is this the right thread for denouncing Sharia Law? I’m not a religious scholar, but isn’t one feature of Sharia Law treating female rape victims as sinners or criminals? I disapprove.

[Here’s a story about that already happening here in the U.S.A.](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-friend-gave-me-date-rape-drugs-and-i-got-pregnant_us_579acf46e4b00e7e269eff0a):

Slacker, I think a couple of people quoted in [this article](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brian-levin-jd/our-america-remarks-to-th_b_11279380.html) had some words for you. Let’s see, there’s George W. Bush, speaking in 2002:

> [@](#):
>
> America rejects bigotry. We reject every act of hatred against people of Arab background or Muslim faith America values and welcomes peaceful people of all faiths — Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and many others. Every faith is practiced and protected here, because we are one country. Every immigrant can be fully and equally American because we’re one country.

Then there’s Barack Obama:

> [@](#):
>
> [Y]ou’ve seen too often people conflating the horrific acts of terrorism with the beliefs of an entire faith. And of course, recently, we’ve heard inexcusable political rhetoric against Muslim Americans that has no place in our country…We’re one American family. And when any part of our family starts to feel separate or second-class or targeted, it tears at the very fabric of our nation.

Care to make a comment that’s not bigoted?

I don’t really understand how intellectually curious adults can be so dumbass parochial as the OP here. It’s like he’s only engaged with a wafer-sized slice of the population his entire life.

It’s just so heavy with preconceived, hokey prejudices. Maybe mixed with a little stirred up fear.

 Care to stop beating your wife?

My other devout Christian friend got back to me on the question of whether Muslims and Christians worship the same god. His answer surprised me a bit, but in the spirit of intellectual honesty I shall reproduce it in full nonetheless, with his name changed to Joe Smith, mine to Mike Jones, and my eldest children’s to John and Jane:

> [@](#):
>
> I appreciate your question. In thinking of “the claim that Muslims and Christians worship the same god”, first I would ask, “Which Muslims and which Christians?” I mean this quite seriously, from both a practical and a theoretical point of view.
>
> Second, even without straining at philosophical and linguistic fine points, the claim could have several different meanings as to what is being asserted. If careful analysis and understanding are sought, problems with unintentional (or perhaps even intentional) equivocation must be addressed. Is what is being asserted simply an identity of person in some abstract metaphysical sense? (and if so, in what sense?) It is not _necessarily_ as straightforward as saying, “John and Jane both have the same father, even though some people address him as Mike and some as Mr. Jones.” For instance, if you heard a person engaging in vicious detraction and defamation of my character, how long would it be, or how divergent would the description need to be before you said to yourself, “That’s not the Joe Smith that I know!” ? {or would you say, “Yes, that’s the same Joe they are talking about, but, wow, what a different description!” )
>
> Now of course neither a devout Muslim nor a devout Christian, of whatever stripe, would be intentionally defaming the character of the god they worship. And, like you, I can see similarities. In fact, though I am far from an expert on Muslim conceptions of divinity, I can see quite a few! For instance, to start with, when a Muslim says, “In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful…”, the Christian would surely be able to say amen to the “compassionate” and the “merciful”. But I am not aware of ANY Muslim interpretation of the Koran that would conceive of, or even allow the possibility, that of the compassion and mercy as being demonstrated and worked out in the incarnation of God in Jesus. I think it is safe to say that John 3:16 is regarded by a sizable fraction of Christians as key to their faith and to the character of the God they worship.
>
> The concept of “Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity”, which is basic to the Christian understanding of God, is anathema to the Muslim. It smacks to them of tri-theism, of the sin of “shirk”, which Muslim teachers proclaim to be a major (some even say _the_ major!) sin! When Christians worship Jesus Christ as, not merely a prophet, but as their savior and the savior of the world, indeed as “God the Son”, are they worshiping the same God as the Muslim does when he recites (in Arabic) from the Koran Quran Chapter An-Nisa(4), VerseNo. (171)
> "GOD is only one god. Be He glorified; He is much too glorious to have a son. "
> [See [http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk/nora/html/4-171.html](http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk/nora/html/4-171.html) ]
>
> Third, while recognizing that it can be dangerous, ungenerous, and often quite inaccurate, to attribute unstated motives, nevertheless, I rather wonder if when “asserted strenuously from people who claim to be Christians of the liberal variety”, the statement “Muslims and Christians worship the same god.” is not intended so much as a precise theological truth, but rather as a plea for tolerance, humane good will, fellow feeling, and even, perhaps, respect and appreciation. Well, I can appreciate that intent, while reserving my approval of the means. I have a liberal Muslim friend. We pray for each other. I value his prayers. Do I believe that in some real and valuable, though limited and qualified sense, we are praying to the same God? Yes, at least I dare to hope so.
>
> Fourth, what is one to make of those Christians of the conservative and ultraconservative variety who stridently (if sometimes accurately) point out and _emphasize_ aspects of vast dissimilarity between Koranic and New Testament teachings? More to the point, what is one to make of those who go beyond this to then insist that the faith and belief and action of the suicide bomber is the “real” Islam, and that those Muslims here in the United States who proclaim Islam as a religion of tolerance and peace are deluded regarding their faith, or still worse and more frightening, willfully and perniciously deceptive? At the very least, I would raise again my first question.
>
> Though Christians are called to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, they are also called to love their neighbor as they love themselves. Nothing is said about the neighbor having the same god. Indeed, the parable of the Good Samaritan was told by Jesus to a Jewish scholar who just _might_ have had some reservations as to whether those Samaritans worshiped the same god! They certainly had different religious worship, but when Jesus spoke to the Samaritan “woman at the well”, he spoke of one God worshiped by both. I’m now thinking that the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman is, from a Christian standpoint, quite germane to this whole issue!
>
> Finally, do tolerance, humane good will, fellow feeling, and even respect and appreciation depend on worshiping the same god? I don’t know that it would be widely accepted that atheists and Christians worship the same god. 😉 And yet I have appreciated your friendship and the humane good will that you have showed me through the years!

Most, if not all, Muslims regard the shared divinity of Jesus as blasphemous. The honor or Prophet is as high as they will go, an honor shared by Mohammed, Abraham, and Jesus. It is, however, entirely explicit that Muslims regard the Deity of Abraham, Jesus, and Mohammed as precisely the same.

And because Muslims hold Jesus in similar high regard as Mohammed, they reject the very idea of the Crucifixion, on the grounds that God would not permit His prophet to be so treated.

IIRC, the Islamic view of the Crucifixion is the same (or nearly the same) as the old Gnostic Christian view. IOW, Jesus was put on the Cross but did not die there.

All it takes to be a real _serious_ Christian scholar is a thorough grounding in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and some German. Also, a couple of lifetimes. That area of the library at Major University should be gated and locked, with a sign that reads “No. Really, don’t do it. This way lies Madness…”

And any bright young scholar who thinks to research and write the definitive work on Gnostic Christianity should be compelled to take a year off school before beginning. Just hang out, think it over…

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote it better. Sayeth King George:

_… You’ll be back, time will tell
You’ll remember that I served you well
Oceans rise, empires fall
We have seen each other through it all
And when push comes to shove
I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love!
…
And I’ll love you till my dying days
When you’re gone, I’ll go mad
So don’t throw away this thing we had
Cuz when push comes to shove
I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love …_

He also said the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists had it coming. Fuck that guy.

That is not what he said, but I would never expect you to be aware of what he did say.
