I have the misfortune of living in a potential swing state this year, so I expect to have to sit through a barrage of campaign ads. Iā€™m dreading it: ā€œObama ā€“ Apply directly to the forehead! Obama ā€“ Apply directly to the forehead!ā€ ā€œBILLY MAYS HERE FOR JOHN MCCAINā€¦ā€ As it happens, I was in Chuck E. Cheese for the first time this past weekend (for a nephewā€™s birthday party), and the noise, the games, the glee, the tears all strike me now as part of a big metaphor. I managed to have a good time until finally near the end: The whole time I was waiting for my wife near the restrooms, a little girl nearby was playing toddler-size Whack-A-Mole. Me, for sure. Not that I actively seek out election information, but my husband is a Fox News fan, and just walking through the kitchen-family room is enough to get my left eye twitching these days. Hell, I have to **teach this shit** as it happens! Ordinarily an election year is good news for American Government teachers. Not this year. Methinks things are going to get a mite testy in the classroom before itā€™s all done with. The big problem Iā€™m facing is maintaining something of an even-handed approach to it all. I canā€™t let my personal biases take over my instruction. Much. Oh, well. Well-reasoned defenses of McCainā€™s positions are entitled to ā€œAā€'s too, I suppose. šŸ˜ƒ ---

I was losing my shit before the midterm elections in 2006, ferchrissake. And what did it get me? Nothinā€™. These days, I find myself wading around in every new shitstream Obama has to ford. Itā€™s unhealthy, I tell ya. Itā€™s not like Iā€™m politically active ā€“ I vote, Iā€™ve contributed a few hundred dollars to anti-Bush folks, thatā€™s all ā€“ Iā€™m just an observer. A stressed-out observer with vanishingly small influence on the outcome. So Iā€™m going to try to check out. I donā€™t have a TV, so that helps. And I donā€™t answer phone calls from numbers I donā€™t recognize, so that takes care of surveys and push polls and the like. I just went and removed politically themed feeds from my RSS reader. That leaves the magazines I subscribe to that have political content (two weekliesā€¦thatā€™s not overexposure, I think), andā€¦the Dope. If I can just keep myself from clicking on election-themed threads, maybe Iā€™ll be OK. Maybe. Starting nowā€¦ ---
