# How many ounces of beer are in a keg?

I was trying to figure out how much beer is consumed in my household for an IMHO thread, and I don’t know how to judge the keg beer vs the canned beer.
How many cans does one keg equal??

According to a couple sites I checked 1 keg = 1984 fluid ounces.

And that would be for a 1/2 barrel keg. There are also full barrels and 1/4 barrel kegs, too. Which size have you got?

Usually 12, but there are also 7-ounce nips, and 16-ounce pint cans.

I believe that I have the regular keg. It LOOKS like a regular sized barrel. I know we don’t have a “pony keg” and this is the only other size I’ve ever seen.

Almost all “regular” sized kegs are half barrels, 15.5 gallons. A full barrel of beer would weigh well over 200 lbs, making it impractical for handling in most uses. The 1984 oz quoted above is for a half barrel.
Just for reference, the 31 gallon barrel is the standard measure for most liquids, including oil. In spite of this, the shipping size (as opposed to measure) is probably most often the famous “55 gallon drum”.

And oil is not shipped in barrels, in any significant way anymore. Nevertheless, when somebody speaks of a “barrel of oil,” they’re talking about 42 gallons.
