I KNOW this would never happen with this group here, but from my 30 years of grocery experience there is about a 75%+ chance that the customer has misread a sign, chosen the wrong product, or is misremembering the price. Scan errors do happen, but…

Customer: This item rang at wrong price. It is supposed to be buy 1, get 1 free.
Me: Yes, each item rang up at half price.
Customer: But one is supposed to be free?!
Me: Let me fix that. (Voids both items and rings one up as full price, the other free.)

Customer: These sodas are supposed to be 2 dollars off.
Me: Sorry sir, Coke products are not on sale, only Pepsi products.
Customer: That’s deceptive!

Anyone else in retail post their numerous examples here.

The answer is simple in Massachusetts: price error =free item. There are inspectors that hit supermarkets and scan everything in the aisle, with large fines for errors.
