somewhat inspired by this thread: [Enrolling in "cybersecurity bootcamps" to meet women?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/enrolling-in-cybersecurity-bootcamps-to-meet-women/1011901): how much of a looker were or are you? (scale 1-10) I’d rate myself as a 6 or 7 (on a good day) … I am 50+, male pattern baldness (trimmed hair to 5-15mm), but I’m +/- tall and slim and sportive looking and a somewhat “winning” personality, so I got that going for me … when younger, i’d still be a 6 or 7 … pro’s are: more hair, cons: I was socially way more awkward than today so how would you rate yourself (yesterday and today)? ---

Youth is a great draw. No matter how unattractive, young woman are naturally attractive to straight men. I am gonna guess and say 6 when I was young. Now, I must say 8. Most women my age are out of shape, overweight, short hair. Not me. ---

I was a good looking kid with lustrous curly brown locks and glacial blue eyes. Kinda skinny, not too tall or short (I peaked at just under 6’). The girls stayed away in droves, though, as I was too shy to pursue them. I’ve always looked young for my age. Now, at 77, I still have quite a bit of my hair, albeit very white/gray, my skin is relatively unblemished, and I walk without aid. And my eyes are still startlingly blue. ---

I’ve come to realize that I was above average in looks when I was young. I continue to have chronically low self esteem, so I certainly thought I was ugly. While not very muscular, I was thin and in much better shape. However, good looks were countered by many idiosyncracies, odd behavior, failure or refusal to follow social norms, and general strangeness. ---

Follow up- I grew a goatee as soon as I could. I think it improves me. Often, I just had an unkempt beard because shaving is literally physically painful for me. Around 1994 or so, my meds stopped working and I went into a very deep and long lasting depression. I had to drop out of college. I could not hold a job. I comforted myself with chocolate and gained between 30 and 60 pounds. Plus, at about that time my psoriasis manifested. This would sometimes result in raw, red patches on my face. Sadly, all the photographs I have of myself were taken after 1994. ---

I’ve never thought of myself as good-looking, either when I was younger, nor today. As a young man, I was very skinny, with dishwater-blonde hair, a prominent nose, and acne. Probably my only “attractive” facial feature was/is blue eyes. When I was in college, several friends pointed out that I resembled Peter Tork, of the Monkees, who was decidedly _not_ “the cute one.” Now, as I near 60, my hair has thinned a lot, and while I’m not thin-as-a-rail anymore, I’m not heavy, either. I don’t have to deal with the acne anymore, but I do have a bit of scarring on my cheeks due to it from my youth. And, now, people tell me I look like Colin Mochrie (from _Whose Line is It Anyway?_), who is also _not_ exactly a heartthrob. So, I’d say, probably not ever more than a 5, and now probably less than that. That said, I had two long-term girlfriends in college, and have been married for 32 years, so I guess personality does help. 😉 ---

Yeah, 6-7 for me as well. Always been reasonably tall and thin with decent shoulders. But nothing special at all. Would probably be a consistent 7 or maybe even a low 8 on a good day if I had better posture and smiled occasionally. ---

I always considered myself to be forgettable - no particularly striking features but nothing to scare children either. I have severe RBF, even when I actually feel quite cheerful. I didn’t date in high school and I don’t know if it was because of my looks or extreme shyness around boys. I never cared about makeup or fashion, so that might have played a part, too. Now, at 70, i have yet to go gray and my face is largely unlined, but I’d never call myself a looker. But I’m nice, dammit. ---

Five when I was younger. Bad chin but tall and with great eyes. I seemed to attract enough ladies but that was mostly personality. ---

I dunno, 5-6/10 as a teen and twenty-something? I always seemed to end up with women I consider 2 points higher than myself. In fact, I was given the “Lyle Lovett” award as a sophomore in college at our school newspaper Christmas party, with the comment: “What do all these girls see in you?” (Lyle Lovett was married to Julia Roberts, for those who don’t remember.) Now? Probably still about a 5, but I have no hair (or, rather, the horseshoe-shaped pattern baldness, though I shave it down) like I did back then. ---

I was probably about a 7 when I was young. I had fine wavy blonde hair and a good figure, and my eyes are greenish blue. But I was awkward and weird - I sometimes think I have Asperger’s Syndrome, as all the descriptions I read about it fit me to a T. So I’d attract, then scare off, desirable men. Nowadays I’m a very typical frumpy chubby grandma type, so I’d say about a 3. ---

I was a fat kid, fat teen, fat adult. Also very shy around girls, My very first date, was around age 16. I was over 6’ tall and probably over 230 lb in HS. I wasn’t exactly ugly, just not attractive. I was a virgin on my wedding night. So was she; we are a sexual island. ---

When I was middle aged, I got a honest “kinda cute” from some women talking about me- who had no idea i happened to be there. Hardly a ringing endorsement, but I guess better than troll. Basically, I have had pretty good relationships and luck with women, but apparently based upon Jessica Rabbits “He makes me laugh”. or “I am tired of jerks and bad boys, and want a nice guy”.
