How much of your house do you use??

We have about 2100 square feet. There are 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms upstairs. Each of the kids has her own room and we use the fourth bedroom as an office/guest room. Both Mr. Legend and I have trouble sleeping at times (and we both snore), so one of us frequently sleeps in the guest bed. Younger daughter uses the downstairs bath and the rest of us use the shower upstairs, and Mr. Legend and I use our jetted tub regularly, so all the bathrooms get full use. There’s a balcony on the back side of the house, off the master bedroom, but it’s got a very shaky rail and some pretty soft spots in the decking, so we only use it for roof access. Once we get it fixed, I suspect Mr. Legend and the younger girl will be out there a lot (it’s got southern exposure, and they love the sun).

The downstairs is an open floor plan with a living room, den, largish kitchen, dining room, full bath, and laundry…er…closet. The main computer is in the dining room, which we’ve pretty much converted to office/work space. The only room we don’t use regularly is, oddly enough, the den. It’s a nice little space that’s open to the rest of the downstairs, we have floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in there chock-full of books that are begging to be read, and there’s a fireplace, the stereo, and a piano, for those so inclined. We typically set things in there when we’re not using them. We’ve just recently acquired a comfy chair (to go with the not-so-comfy loveseat and ottoman), so I hope that some of the human members of the family will get in the habit of using the room this winter. We also have covered porches in the front and back, and someone sits out there fairly often.

When (if?) the kids move out, this house will become far too big for us, but we’ll probably keep it anyway. It’s hard to imagine living in a smaller place once you’ve filled up the house you’re in.

I have a kitchen (where I also eat), bathroom, my bedroom/study, a guest bedroom, living room and a large basement/kitchen/storage area.

I spend most of my time in my room. The guest bedroom and living room are mostly used by Mom: I couldn’t care less about TV and wouldn’t even own one if it wasn’t for visitors. The basement is used for storage. If Mom wasn’t so likely to just drop herself into my second bedroom, I probably would have used one as my bedroom and the second one’s primary use would have been as my study (I’m seriously starting to consider taking her copy of my house’s keys away).

Mostly the lower part of each room; the top six inches or so near the ceiling hardly needs to be there at all.

I have no idea how many square feet of home I have, but my house is on three floors, plus storage space in the roof; the ground floor is probably the least used, containing a garage (converted to workshop and storage), a general purpose room in which there is a piano, folding guest bed, and some chairs and a small washroom containing a toilet and basin.

There isn’t any part of the house (except the loft storage) that isn’t used daily.

In my shared accommodation I use my room (pretty much all the floor space and storage space) the bathoom and a kitchen cupboard. I walk through the living room to get my post and see what’s in my kitchen cupboard but that’s it.

My girlfriend’s place is full to the brim, mostly to make space for our wee girl

I have two rooms, kitchen bath, and a large storage area. I use them all, even sleeping in the window-less storage area during the day.

When I was looking at houses I very specifically wanted one I’d use all of. No parlor, none of that crap. As it is, it’s abotu 1800 square feet, and I do pretty much use it all. I use the guest bedroom less, but still use it some (and definately for storage), and I use the library less but definately some. I eat in the dining room, there is no unused living room.

I have a five bedroom, three story house (plus basement)–I’m not sure exactly how much square footage we have though. When the Hallgirls lived at home, it seemed like we had more than enough space. Now that it’s just Hallboy and I, it seems like we use the space more lavishly. He has his room, and I have my own, of course. The kitchen gets used daily, and the formal livingroom is the place I go to read (which is a lot) since there’s not a television in there, plus it’s where “company” visits. The two bedrooms that the Hallgirls had have now been turned into a guest room (which gets used at least a couple times per month), and my studio that holds my computer and all my sewing stuff. The washer/dryer are in the basement, and the extra bedroom acts as a family room, with the television. That’s where we hang out most frequently. The diningroom is a complete waste of space and is only used as a pass through into the eat-in kitchen, and to hold Val, the rabbit. We have one full bath (and a half bath in the basement) which gets used a LOT.

Overall, I say that Hallboy and I do a pretty good job of using most of the house.

what I don’t ever use, however, is the backyard, shaded by a beautiful old tree. I like the idea of having a back yard, but there’s bugs and stuff out there.

some interesting pet statistics in this thread:

in 47 posts, we have 8 homes with cats, 1 with a rabbit, and NO dogs.

conclusion: gee, I dunno.

strangely enough there is an unused space in my house. West of the galley kitchen there used to be table and chairs occupying the other half of our refurbished kitchen area. This furniture now moved to the former LR turned DR, opens up this space that is wide open but feels empty and unused. I want to put small sofachairs in that empty space and better lighting and a small table. but no islands, maybe an elevated snakbar.

I did not mention it, but we have 2 cats and a Hermit Crab.

Oh, I have a dog. Also a cat, and fish. And two aquatic frogs and a snail. And a boyfriend. (I’m trying to get him to crap in the box with the cat, as it would be much more convenient.)

Definitely a well-used house here (3 br flat - buggered if I know what the square meterage is).

I’d say that everyone uses every room for something pretty much every day. Admittedly, all Her Tinyness uses the toilet for is pulling out the toilet roll and trying to play in the cat litter, but we’re working on that

We have a 2bd/1bt, 870 sq ft apartment that is shared by myself, my husband, my son, my best friend and two cats.

Not only do we use every square inch for something, but most of my best friends things are still at her ex-girlfriend’s house and about half of my son’s things are at my moms house.
We’ll be upgrading in the beginning of the year.

We’ve got a cat and a dog, and they use the living room and dining room daily - there’s a sliding patio door in the dining room that the dog likes to sleep beside, and the cat’s tree is beside the bow window in the living room. Actually, they both have pretty much the run of the place, except that I keep the guest rooms closed. Heck, as long as they got fed, they’d be happy living in the car…

Officially 6 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, but two of the bedrooms have been put to other uses. Two other bedrooms are currently not being used, since the kids moved out. But they were in use until fairly recently, and we have specific uses planned for them in future. For now, though, the upper floor of the house (two bedrooms, a bathroom, and some storage space) is a place we seldom go. The rooms on the other two floors get used all the time.

On the main floor, the living room has bookcases, reading chairs, a couple of couches, fireplace and the TV; it’s used every day. The kitchen obviously is a busy place. Dining room is currently undergoing remodeling, but gets used when it’s in shape. My office has books, computers, file cabinets and whatnot associated with bookkeeping, correspondence, and various other aspects of running a household (and sometimes working from home). Both main floor bathrooms get used every day. The guest bedroom gets used quite a bit, as we frequently have family come to visit from out of town; it’s also a nice place to sneak off to for a nap. The master bedroom is where we sleep and store clothes and personal stuff. The deck gets used most of the year, for dining or just sitting out in the evenings, though obviously not much in the winter months. We put the cars and various lawn and gardening things in the garage.

The walk-out basement has the laundry room, my workshop (in the furnace room) with all kinds of power tools and the nuts & bolts and so forth you need to have around the house. The den has a fireplace, the bar, microwave, fridge & sink, and the stereo, along with couch and chairs and so forth; we use it for socializing, reading, and listening to music, or just to hang out by the fireplace. (There’s also a second kitchen range, which is very handy when we’re having a party. It’s also great for baking dessert or bread while dinner is in the kitchen oven). My wife’s office/studio has her computer, file cabinets and various office impedimenta, as well as her tools and equipment for painting, floral design, sewing and assorted craft stuff. She’s in there for some part of almost every day. My music room has my guitars and other gear (mic stands, amps, speakers, all that junk), another desk & computer, and the piano. The closets hold instrument cases, board games, folding chairs, and several inflatable mattresses (when we have a big party we often have 10 or 12 out of town guests staying two or three days). I use the music room a lot, to practice, write songs, or just hang out and jam with friends. There’s also a full bath on that floor, which gets used often, and a storage room where we keep the deck & patio furniture in the winter and the camping gear (along with, sadly, a lot of our books in boxes, because we don’t have enough bookcases for them yet - something I’m working on). Off the den is the patio (under the deck), which we use for summertime parties.

Once the current remodeling is done, we plan to turn one of the kids’ bedrooms upstairs into a library/reading room, well apart from the rest of the house, nice and quiet. The other bedroom will become another guest room, easing the need for air mattresses in the living room and elsewhere when we have a houseful of family.

The only additional space we feel we need right now is an outbuilding large enough to house the tractor and other lawn & garden stuff; it’s way too cramped in the garage right now. That’s on the “someday” list, but it’s moving up in priority.

It seems like a “big” house, but we have a lot of interests and hobbies, many of which require a fair amount of equipment, tools, and space. We also do a good bit of entertaining. So no, it doesn’t seem too large to us. In fact, it’s a great relief, after living in a much smaller place for many years, to finally have room to spread out and enjoy the things we enjoy.

(Oh, and this “empty nest syndrome” people talk about? It’s a myth! Seeing the kids grow up and move out, and getting our house to ourselves is great!)

I’m in a three-bedroom apartment/two bathroom. It’s just me and two cats. I have my bedroom, one room for a guest room, and one room has the kitty litter. I am looking at going back to two bedrooms.

Honestly, I rarely use half of my apartment.

Susan

We have 5-bedrooms upstairs and a walkout basement, but the rooms are relatively small so the overall square footage is not huge.
The only room that doesn’t get used is eldest daughter’s, as she just went to college. The other 2 kids each have a room, then there is our bedroom, and my wife’s office. She uses the office daily for all household management and related to her work teaching at a community college.
We eat most of our meals in the dining room. There is a TV in one room - if we aren’t watching TV, we could be reading either in that room or in the living room. Sometimes the room we use depends on the time of day, as they get vastly different sunlight.
Downstairs has the TV with vid games, an internet computer, sewing machine, my bigger fish tank, and laundry/workroom, so most of us go down there most days.
We also have a deck and patio out back, and a seating area out front that we use quite frequently.

When all 3 of our kids are in college in 3 years, we intend to downsize.

I have a family of four + a dog in a two bedroom apartment (one bath). It is not unusual for someone to be peeing while someone is brushing teeth and another is bathing in a bathroom the size of a closet.
The washer/dryer are in the kitchen next to our table. We have one TV with an antennae in the living room and one in my husband’s & my bedroom with a VCR hooked up. The kids share a bedroom (one twin bed, one crib). We’re all over each other.
Lesson folks: don’t reproduce too early (I have two step-kids too). I’m what happens when you do.

I didn’t mention our pets, since they don’t have their own rooms. The three cats are the non-humans who use the den, along with (until very recently - RIP Stewart) the lone guppy in the 20-gallon aquarium (we hope to get some new fish soon). The dog just wanders about underfoot wherever he can, and the lizard lives in her 4 x 2 cage in our youngest’s bedroom.

Razorette and I share our 2-year-old 2,100-sq-ft house with two dogs and two cats. It’s a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, with one of the bedrooms being an actual guest room (which gets used a couple of times a month); one bedroom is used as a study. We eat in the dining room most of the time, the master bedroom is huge, with a large walk-in closet and two-room “bath suite” that we can both use without getting in each other’s way. It’s actually a modest home, compared with the starter-mansions we looked at, but it’s designed to get maximum use out of the square footage. Kitchen, dining room and living room kind of all blend together.

I guess we use most of the house most of the time.
