I get the federal standard: 20 PTO days + 10 federal holidays. Luckily, my company lets me slightly flex on the holidays, so I can take it a week before or after the holiday if I want to. That’s nice because I usually prefer to take the Friday off, not the Monday.
A timely poll, as I’m on vacation right now.
I get 22 days of vacation/personal time off, and I usually take a couple of unpaid days on top of that.
However, before I left work on Wednesday, I noticed an extra 40 hours had mysteriously been added to my vacation balance. I don’t know where it came from, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Next year, when I bridge my time, I’ll get an extra 2 weeks.
I get 25 days leave, plus public holidays. Plus we have a good flexitime system, so I can take time off to make up for any extra hours worked - that usually gives me another couple of days in the year.
(Of course, at the moment, I’m not working at all. But I’m due to go back to work after the summer. I’m already planning when to take my holidays - can you tell I’m not looking forward to office life again?)
I teach.
This year is special since I am on parental leave (I think I am taking about 26 weeks?).
Every other year, I get 20 days which I usually take as two weeks off and a day here and there to get stuff done or go on day trips.
Hubby only gets 15 days so I get some days off to just be by myself, too.
I get 20 vacation days a year (along with personal days, sick days, holidays, etc). I have a hard time taking them all, but I usually manage to get them all used. I like my job for the most part, but if the choice is “4 day weeks for the last three months of the year to use up remaining days” or “lose vacation days with no compensation”, it’s a pretty easy choice.
I’ve been at the same company for almost 12 years now, so I get somewhere upwards of 5 weeks a year. I probably take 3-4 of them. Usually two different week long holidays, and then a bunch of 1-2 days scattered throughout the year.
In my old job, which was a big accounting firm, I got five weeks (and usually took all or most of it).
My new job, in discount retail, I only get two weeks - which is quite an adjustment.
I take all they give me, which is ~3 weeks.
To those who don’t use their vacation - why? I honestly can’t understand it. What is it about you that is so essential to your job that they can’t function without you?
This year I’ll be taking more than two weeks (maybe); many years I only take a week. I get four weeks, but rarely take off. It helps that we shut down between Christmas and New Year – that’s a vacation without taking vacation days.
I get 3 weeks (120 hours) of paid vacation time per year but most of the time is taken up by two mandatory shutdown periods. As a result, whether I want it or not I have the first week of July and the last week of December off. The rest of the time is available more or less at my discretion. In another six year I’ll earn another forty hours for my annual allotment
On top of this fully paid vacation I have a number of sick/personal days available to me that are paid at 50% of my regular pay. Every year I am allotted one of these days per calendar year I’ve been employed at my facility. The downside of these days is that they do count against my attendance record and can lead to disciplinary action if absences add up. These days make up a useful cushion if I have an excused absence that would otherwise be unpaid, FMLA for example, but should not be overused
I get 20 vacation and 2 personal days, since I’ve been here more than 8 years. New Employees only get 10 vacation days, and then 15 after 4 year. I try my best to use them up but usually waste 2 to 4. We’re not allowed to carry them over so we “use 'em or lose 'em”.
The general guidance is that these days are a form of compensation, so one should use them. But if using up your vacation results in incomplete work or working weekends, you lose either way.
I now get 4 weeks, and plan to take it all. Plus the holidays that everyone gets.
I generally don’t take nearly my allotment of sick days, as I only use them when I’m really sick.
I’m a self-employed artist with nobody to take over when I’m gone. So taking time off is very tricky. Until recently I usually took about 2 weeks, but for the last few years it’s been averaging closer to 3 weeks. Of course I don’t get any vacation pay like most people do.
This year, I’m starting a very large commissioned project, which will probably take me all summer. So I can’t go anywhere until it’s finished, and I can’t plan ahead.
Teacher here, I get around 4 months of vacation per year.
Get 4 weeks, take 4 weeks.
I’m self employed, and I can’t afford to take off work very much. Usually I take a few days around each holiday. It might add up to a week’s worth per year.
I get 22 days plus comp days for the holidays I invariably end up working, so it adds up to about five weeks.
It doesn’t carry over past July 1, so I studiously use every second of it.
I also get two weeks for Continuing Medical Education, plus a $2500 allowance to attend a conference. That’s really only enough for one conference, so I usually let the other CME week go. Next year they’re talking about eliminating the conference allowance altogether but still giving us the two weeks so we can “do our CME from home”. If so, you’d better damn well believe I’ll be taking the full two weeks.
I get three weeks: I take three weeks. I’m in a job that has a high burnout rate, and that’s how I’ve survived for almost 5 years. Vacation keeps me sane.
I’m going to guess that at least for some of them it isn’t PAID vacation. So taking the allowed time off=less income.
