I don’t want to leave any money on the table, so I’m going to say $2000, but I’m willing to negotiate. A lot. It’s just a message board, guys. I mean, what sort of nut job would turn down $100,000 to not post here? That’s fucking crazy. ---

Anyone who thinks that this is anything more than a one-time stunt is just daydreaming. Only Liberal could be so wacky as to jokingly offer to pay someone to leave, and then get goaded into honoring the offer. Seriously, this is like Brittany shaving her head…a 9 day wonder, not a trend. ---

Yes, it’s crazy to offer to stop posting here for less money than you paid to begin posting here. $5 - I laugh at your joke $50 - Still not a serious offer $500 - A serious offer but one I wouldn’t hesitate to turn down $5000 - An impressive offer but I’d still say no $50000 - Now you’re in the neighbourhood where I’m starting to consider the possibility $500000 - See you guys in two years And, yes, I am serious about those numbers. Fifty thousand dollars, for example, is a lot of money. But then I think about what I would actually do with it (money - as money - is just paper and numbers). I’m not going to retire on that amount or buy a new house. I’ve got a good car. So I’d probably spend it on things I enjoy. And posting here is something I already enjoy. So I’d have to weigh whether or not the amount of happiness I’d get from my new things would be greater than the loss of the happiness I have now. ---

You’re some kind of weirdo, my friend. How much money would I need to stop posting on the Dope? I honestly don’t know that. A tidy sum of money would change my life (and my husband’s), and it would actually be unethical for me NOT to take it (refuse to make our lives better by continuing to post on a message board? How could I do that?) But I like it here - this is my online community. It’s hard to put a dollar figure on something as amorphous as a feeling of community. Take a two year sabbatical? That would require less, but at the end of two years, I probably wouldn’t be back, because I would be well out of the habit. Lie about my opinions about things I feel strongly about? That really does feel a whole lot dirtier. I would have to say there is no amount of money that would make me compromise my integrity, because I value it too much. (That all said without a million dollars in small bills on the table in front of me, of course.)
