Probably about 355 days of the year I consume some alcohol, but I get drunk only about a half dozen times a year. As others have noted, if, as is my situation, I never let it interfere with work or social situations/obligations (I do take taxis often), then it’s not a problem.
My SO and I usually split a bottle of wine (750mL) once a week, on the weekends. IF we’ve had really busy/stressful weeks, we might buy a litre-and-a-half and split that (and I’ll admit, most of it goes into me), but that’s maybe once every couple of months. When we visit his family, we drink wine more often (French Quececkers, whaddayawant? ), pretty much at every supper. That tends to be at least 2 bottles for 4 people, sometimes as much as 4 bottles. If I’m with my best friend (who I see a couple of times a year only due to living in different provinces for school), I will likely get totally wasted on beer or something, but I’m not sure how much that takes - 7 or 8 in 3 hours, at least, but it varies.
So basically, I drink heavily when there’s a special occasion, and not-so-much the rest of the time. And it’s usually wine.
Better than when I was 15. I’d drink at least 2 x 40oz of beer a night, about twice to three times a week, and likely smoke pot too. That lasted til I was about 17 or so, and then realised that I hated myself for how I partied, etc, and toned it down a LOT.
I’ll have a couple of beers or a couple of glasses of wine probably 3-4 times a week, rarely more, sometimes less.
Additionally, I probably go out and get moderately hammered (too drunk to drive, not too drunk to walk) about once a month. It’s very rare for me to get seriously blitzed anymore…OK, there was Match Day a couple of weeks ago, but before that it was probably the middle of last year.
Dr. J
I drink 5-15 (I lose count at some point) drinks (usually whiskey) three or four nights a week. It’s a lot, especially for a woman. I get drunk, but I always stay coherent and get myself home safely. I never drink alone, never when I’m depressed, and rarely before the sun goes down.
I rarely get the chance to drink, and it’s even rarer that I have a chance to get completely drunk (hey, I ain’t legal… for another two months). So it’s probably once a month or so that I go out and drink… usually, I stick with vodka or gin (my staples), but I’ll take tequila shots, or whiskey. I have a good system worked out… I’ve determined that once I lose my peripheral vision (the drunker I get, the more tunnel-visioned I get), it’s time to stop drinking (I violated that rule once, and, well, Mr. Stomach was unhappy).
But I guess I’m technically a binge drinker… but like ElwoodCuse, I think the term is thrown about too easily. I consider myself a “coordinated drinker”, in that I will only drink when I have an occasion to celebrate (such as the opening night of a show, or a New Year’s party, or something) and when I have a good friend to drink with (one of the grand traditions in my circle of friends is “getting drunk together” and watching how fucked up we each get).
Roughly about two or three drinks a month.
I rarely go out, and when I do my limit is two a night, (though I have been known to stretch it to three on rare occasions).
My father and my father-in-law are both alcoholics, so both Mr Goo and myself monitor our alcohol consumption carefully, since neither of us wants to put the other through what we both went through growing up.
a 6 or a 12 pack on the weekends is binge drinking ?
wow…I come from a family where a 6-pack is what ya have with dinner
I’ts not unusual for people to go through 2 or 3 cases or more a day in my circle of people
But I dont drink all that often becuase I dont like beer …
But when I have a high tolerance for booze so it takes dangerous amounts for me ot get really drunk
So its more like every couple of mnths ill get buzzed or so… i haven bed wel lseriously drunk in year or 2
I drink alcohol roughly every other day, I suppose. I often drink a can or bottle of beer (about 500ml) with my dinner. I like to keep a small selection of real ales in so I can choose one to complement the meal. Sometimes I have wine with dinner instead. When I have wine with dinner, I share with the SO. We usually end up having about half the bottle, but he only has one glass, so I do have more there. Occasionally I get carried away and have all of it. On the other hand, I quite often just have water with my dinner.
I like a glass of Amaretto on ice in the evening while watching the telly. That’s my Saturday night treat, although it isn’t an every single saturday ever thing. I’ll have two or three glasses of Amaretto while watching one of those 80s nostalgia programmes.
I like to go to the pub with mates and have between 1 and 3 pints. Might go to the pub once a week, once a fortnight?
Also I sometimes have a dram of whisky while in IRC talking with my internet pals from Brunching. IRC feels like the pub anyway.
So I sometimes drink, and sometimes don’t. I mainly drink with meals, and choose a drink which complements the flavours of my meal.
There was a stage when I’d drink nearly every night (when money allowed). I’d probably have averaged about 5 pints a night during the week and a bit more during the wkend.
Now because of age, work, laziness etc. I really only drink on the wkend. Every now I then I go out for a “pint” after work and end up usually having 4-8 depending on how many people are there.
During a wkend night out I’d guess between 8-12 pints would be normal. I wouldn’t be legless after this by any means and would be able to carry on a normal enough conversation
Among most people I know this would not be OTT at all and I do not think that I have a problem at all. When I’ve got money and I’m in the mood I go out when I don’t want to or can’t afford it I don’t. No problem here
As an aside the most I’ve ever drank was probably after a wkend shift when we went to a pub that opened at 7am and we (4 of us) stayed there drinking solidly till 2am the following morning. I was slightly merry after that one
Never been drunk - no desire to ever be drunk. Alcohol puts me to sleep, so I rarely drink in social situations. Last drink I had was a glass of wine about 3 weeks ago. Before that - I have no idea. I never developed a taste for beer and the mixed drinks I like are much too sweet for me to want many anyway.
Mostly, tho, I don’t drink much because I’ve watched members of my family drink far too much on too many occasions. One sister totalled a car, father got puking drunk at two of my sisters’ weddings, brother gets obnoxious and argumentative, mother laughs it off as she pours another glass of wine. No thanks. If I’m not having a good time without a drink, maybe it’s just not a good time after all…
I had serious problems with binge drinking wine. I would buy a bottle and finish it. Damn near killed myself on several occasions, as I am phobic about not puking. My stomach is all messed up from drinking. Finally, I stopped on 3/1/88 and have not drunk since.
My brother gave up drinking when he was in the hospital with kidney and liver failure, my younger sister when she lost use of her arm in a bizarre alcohol related accident. My older sister can have two drinks and stop. I think she was switched at brith.
I hate and revile all you imbibers of alcohol and have ever since I was anally raped by 7 AA back-sliders on my 13th birthday and made to sing chain gang songs, receiving a thrust on every “UH”. Oh, hang on, that was just a fantasy…
The real reason I hate drinkers is because they CAN. Started my love affair with alcohol at about 15 and never looked back. Fortunately I was broke a considerable part of my life, or I would have wound up (twice)in the hospital much sooner than I did.
Yes, folks, 2 years without so much as a sniff of (sniff) booze.
As one witty poster once replied to a similar declaration, “You must be terribly thirsty.”
And I reply,“You’re goddamn right!”
Dalovindj, I had a hellatious tolerance for the stuff, too. I regularly drank 240 pound dudes under the table when I weighed 160.
But be careful; it doesn’t hit you until it does. Sounds simplistic-here’s how it starts. I don’t wanna wait til 5:00, I’m thirsty now, a couple of hours won’t make any difference. Why wait til 3:00,etc.,etc. It creeps ever-earlier until you’re seriously wondering how beer tastes on corn flakes.
I’m still terribly thirsty, bored, paranoid; all of which booze could alleviate. Some days are worse than others, but they’re all a matter of hanging on by my fingernails.
I no longer drink. It really isn’t that much to give up. Really.
My entire family is addicted to either drugs or alcohol. It has ruined them and my relationship with them. I haven’t spoken to them in many years. I stopped all of that when I left home and my life has been 100X better as a result.
I’m not saying you should quit drinking, just evaluate what alcohol really means to you. Why do you drink it? Is it just to unwind, or because you have a “thirst” for it? If the latter then maybe you should try being dry for a while.
So dj, what you doin’ this weekend?
Yep, I really likes me a good drink too.
I’ve settled a little bit lately, though. Bout’ a year ago I was doing the whole 12-pack a night thing … unless I went to the bar instead, but I’ve chilled considerably. I have drank only once in the past week and a half. Trying to save money, mostly.
If given a chioce, I’d do a sixer with dinner each night just to relax the ol’ bones.
Hmm, glad none of my family is on this board (sorry you had to find out this way Sinyster but you are adopted). How often do I drink, well I’m an able bodied 21 year old with a good job his own car and house with enough disposable income to go out every single day. Not blatant enough, I’ll see if I can help you out here. Between 3 and 7 days a week I go out, I may have a beer or three, I may try to kill a half gallon (again sorry bout that Sinyster) it depends on the night. I have an uncanny ability to not get any type of hangovers (and by god I usually deserve them) I have a high tolerance, about 98% of the time I’m a laid back pacifist drunk whom enjoys pool, a bit of dancing, and a smile and a few words from a pretty lady (occasionally those words are go to hell, but I normally have a slightly more favorable response). It’s a good time; I’ve been doing this for about five years, and hope for another few before I’m officially “grown up”. As to drinking and driving I won’t drive after one beer so how’s that for being grown up.
Clever Hans: I’m saucy… or was that sauced.
I love beer. Hell, I even run a website about the stuff! Mind you, my bio on that website is completely fiction, as are all the others…just a means for my friends and myself to keep ourselves entertained.
Anyway, I would say on average I drink 3 to 4 nights a week. Usually have at least 5 beers, sometimes more. But while that may classify me as an alcoholic, I in no way feel I am. I can, and have quit drinking for prolonged periods of time for various reasons. And alcohol has not affected my professional life, nor do I drunk drive.
I enjoy drinking…love the relaxation of it, love the common bond of beer between friends. It’s one of my favorite pastimes. Perhaps that does classify me as an alcoholic then…who knows? If that’s the case, I’m fine with that.
“Beer – the cause and solution to all of life’s problems” – Homer J. Simpson.
dalovindj, you are the wind beneath my wings…
I probably average one or two drinks a week–but that is only an average. I almost always have a beer (less often glass of wine) when eating out; very rarely when home. So I just spent a week in New Orleans and had a beer every night. I like beer, but I rarely think to have one when I am home. In my somewhat misspent youth, I did get drunk a few times, but I never saw the point. Mostly I just got sleepy. My doctor thinks I should have several drinks a week, but it just doesn’t attract me particularly. Except for an occasional sip of scotch, I haven’t had a hard drink probably in a decade.
Probably a couple of times a month - sometimes a little more, sometimes less. I drink a little when I’m at a party or going out with friends, but it’s mainly champagne and girly drinks.
