Being stuck in a major city with out electricity for 3 days is, in my terms = rat shit crazy… No Running water (pumps powered by electricity), no refridgeration, no gasoline (electric pumps again) and worst of all… no Television/radio/telephone/internet for many…
I have been in cities hit by tornados and was among the first in the dig out/rescue/comfort teams. My equpiment… good boots, a strong back and ability to both give and take orders. Also, I did not panic.
One of my fave memories from the Edmonton tornado was watching a really talented woman take a 5 yr old girl out of a pile of wreckage. No one knew where her parents were, or even if they were still alive. The girl had a metal spike sticking out of her thigh. The woman said “wow… are you ever brave! I bet the doctors will be able to fix that right away!” after she held the girl and continued to comfort her for 45 minutes until the firestation medic could handle her, the woman burst into tears.- but NOt until she was out of range of the girl.
The girls parents showed up at another aid station about an hour later. The same woman took them safely through the demolished neighbourhood and carefully introduced them to their daughter (she made sure with the medics that it was ok…)
In the mean time, she helped to close off a gas main and helped numerous survivors get to a collection zone.
