The same judgement that saw the digital services tax implemented and then scrapped days later?

The same judgement that saw Canada’s recognition of Palestine with caveats that aren’t going to occur, so the recognition isn’t going to occur, just as his deadline is coming up? The one Trump is now using as an excuse not to make a deal? How does recognizing Palestine, which hasn’t happened for 70+ years, right now rather than a week from now make a good deal for Canadians?

Frankly, explain the logic of this because it doesn’t make any sense unless the worst is assumed? And that is Carney knows he can’t make a deal and is using this as the excuse the deal isn’t getting done rather than his inability to make a deal otherwise. This way he gets to blame Trump and deflect from his broken promises to get it done by a certain date.

Jeez, I almost get the feeling you don’t like Carney or something.

Some people/politicians are all brag, blow and bluster. And there are times that call for such.

Then there are those who are more comfortable acting quietly, subtly, more at ease without the glare of the spot light.

It would seem to me, we’ve all had our fill of the former. I personally find the latter, a refreshing and welcome change in the political arena.

Also, he’s not spewing lies and calling people childish names. I find I really like that in a politician.

Also I think, ‘Deep connections in international banking and finance.’, is a better flex than, ‘I’m tight with all the richest dudes on earth!’

So what you are saying is that Carney has lost your vote?

Putting aside your rhetoric that Carney is a weak flip-flop, THEN CHANGED to Carney’s hard elbows will destroy our country… I’m sure if he secured a deal you’d hate that one too. Or you’d bring up something else to hate about him. You just hate Carney. You hate him because he is the leader of the Liberals.

Its fine to hate Carney, and its fine to hate him because he is a Liberal. What’s hilarious is how you entertain this fig leaf that you hate him because of some honest evaluation of his policy and actions. No. You have hated him regardless of anything. You have hated him right off of the bat (starting months ago). You’ve hated him personally and quite consistently on that basis too.

Again, all fine. You are allowed to hate the PM on whatever basis. That’s your right. Just don’t think that your hated gives you the ability to convince anyone else that Carney is at fault for failing to secure a deal with Trump.

All Canadians will blame Trump. Anyone who is not blinded by hatred of Carney will blame Trump. We have all seen and heard of Trump’s shit. We all hate him. He has threatened our safety and livelihoods. Carney could whip his dick out and place it on the negotiating table telling the Yanks to “yank on this” and a GOOD chunk of Canadians would cheer him on.

Read the room. Even if you think you are brilliantly right (like a master debater), Canadians are so sick and tired of Trump’s shit that we have been poisoned and sicken by anything to do with him. That is just where we are at.

ETA: I have no evidence that Carney’s team are engaging in any uncouth behaviour during negotiations. When talking to the press they have been always extremely cordial even in the face of Howard Lutnick’s taunts and Trumps tantrums.

And here’s the thing: He hasn’t “failed to secure a deal with Trump”, any more than Trump has failed to secure a deal with us. We’re still negotiating, it’s only been three months since the election, for fuck’s sake. Anyone who thinks we should have whipped out a deal on one of the largest trade partnerships in the world this fast is as stupid as Trump. Look at the crap he’s bragging about with Japan and Europe. There’s no detail there, it’s all just hand-waving. That’s not what Canada needs, and not what the US needs either.

Yes, being responsible takes time, and doesn’t lend itself well to cheap shot tweets.

Why don’t you answer the question? What purpose is there to piss off Trump by recognizing the Palestinians at the same time important negotiations are under way that affects the lively hood of tens of thousands of Canadians? The rational people get it, you hate Trump. You’d rather thousands of people lose their jobs just so you can spit in his eye. You hate him so much that you can’t cast a critical eye on your guy’s lack of action and incompetence. The larger room is full of those Canadians who don’t want to lose their jobs because Carney can’t deliver on HIS promises.

Or, it’s not about Palestine, like its not about fentanyl. Its not Carney either. Its Trump. Trump is why we are having difficulties getting a deal. Trump is not consistent nor reliable in anything he does. Everything he says is a lie. He has pure malice towards us.

Of course Trump is the problem. You elected Carney because you thought he was the answer because he said he was the answer. He now knows he isn’t the answer and is playing the distraction game with Palestine.

The real answer is that we can’t be dependent on the US as our only customer. But that takes years to resolve and so far, nothing is being done to resolve it. The US is eating our lunch because if they see a market they develop it. If we see a market, and we don’t (Trudeau saying their is no market for LNG. Another reason that bill C5 will fail is that government can’t see opportunity and will bet on cricket farms), it takes us significantly longer to get shit done with more risk. Money moves elsewhere.

So, in the mean time, we have to bandaid our relationship with the US and get the best deal we can at this time. Or, we can do what Carney is doing and keep poking the elephant with a stick.

To be fair people elected Carney because the Conservatives somehow managed to fuck up a 25 point lead over a flatlining Liberal party.

Now maybe that kind of incompetence doesn’t speak to their abilities to advocate for distinct Canadian foreign policy positions or independent trade choices. But when you _want_ to be a dependent appendage to American power maybe it helps.

Holy fuck.

Maybe, just maybe, the stuff about Palestine is _actually about_ Palestine, where mass starvation is occurring and several countries of which Canada is just one are threatening to recognize Palestine in order to place pressure on Israel to stop starving Palestinian children already. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the US outside the fact that Trump is a Bibi fan and is getting his panties in a knot over it.

But go ahead, tell us all about how trying to stop children from starving is just intentionally poking Trump in order to distract us from the fact that we haven’t renegotiated CUSMA yet.

Also, WTF? The Japanese and EU deals are _worse_ than the deal we already have with the US. Outside of steel, aluminum, and cars (which are admittedly a very large exception) CUSMA-compliant exports still have zero tariffs. How on earth are you holding up a 15% tariff deal as something to aspire to when it’s worse than what’s already in place?

Exactly. Canada is actually standing on principle here (although after having initially fully supported Israel but hey, it seemed like the thing to do at the time) rather than catering to the whims of Donald Trump who can find a reason to get mad at you if you say the sky is blue. If it wasn’t Gaza it would be softwood lumber or dairy or smoke from the wildfires or fentanyl or something. Trump doesn’t need an excuse to get mad at Canada. Carney knows the wisest course of action is to wait for Trump to die so cooler heads can prevail. And he hasn’t yet been caught on a hot mic shit-talking Trump, which was the thing that ruined Trudeau’s relationship with Trump. At some point Trump will probably decide he doesn’t like Carney anyway, the same way he sours on everyone. But in the meantime, Carney has a country to run.

Calling out the tragedy in Gaza and recognizing the rights of Palestinians is appropriate because it’s the right thing to do, and it’s the right of a sovereign nation (that is not the 51st state) to do it.

And, incidentally, Canadians don’t have hoods, lively or otherwise. We do have livelihoods, though, as in, a means of earning a living. The word originates from well before the 17th century, a variant of _livelode_ – “means of keeping alive” (c. 1300), which is from Old English _liflad_ “course of life,” from _lif_ “life”.

Trump is an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. By the way, thanks, William Shakespeare, for the quote!

I’m a lot less worried about Trump’s “51 State” nonsense now. This guy cannot plan his way out of a paper bag, much less plan how to take over the second-largest country on the planet. We may have our own internal differences, but on one thing we can all agree: Canada hates Trump, and we do not want to be American, and we will never be American. That might surprise some Americans, who have been raised on “Everybody in the world wishes they were American, and Canadians should be pleased to join the Union,” but that’s not what Canadians want. We like our independence, our seat at the UN, our … well, independence. Why the hell do Americans think we would want to join the US?

Under those circumstances, Carney is doing just fine. He’s caused Trump to think, something Trudeau could never achieve. Trump could, and did, push Justin Trudeau around with threats, but he cannot do the same with Carney. Carney is too smart.

How many Canadian (vs Mexican) companies are currently registered to take advantage of CUSMA? Why will it be difficult or impossible for some/many to not be able to register?
