Having worn the same old boring hair style for (mumble, mumble) years, I did a drastic thing last week and shaved it all off. Really short. Really, really short. Boot camp or better short. So far, I like it. I was shooting for Jean-Luc Picard, but I’m afraid I hit somewhere between Abel Magwich and Curly from the Three Stooges. But it’s still a refreshing change. Now my question is how far should I let it grow out. I don’t want to go all the way to shiny, Yul Brynner style, so I have to grow it out a little. I’m looking for long enough so you can tell what color my hair is (dark brown with liberal sprinklings of gray) but not so long that I have to comb it. Any other dopers who wear their hair real short? Do you keep it trimmed yourself or (IMHO) waste $15 having a barber shave it? Do you have a clipper guard number you prefer? 1 or 2? or higher? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? ---

Bald heads look fine as long as you have a nice shaped head, not to many scars from banging it around, not a lot of funny lumps (a phrenologist’s dream) or one of those big fat rolls at the juncture where your skull meets your neck. Needs2know ---

There have been at least 2 threads on this subject in the past 6 moths…if you search the archives I’m sure you’ll get some additional feedback. I’d do it for you, except I am lazy turd. I wear my hear _closely_ shaved, no gaurd on the clippers. I do it myself, about every 10 days or two weeks. When it gets long enough that I can grab it between 2 fingers, it’s time for a buzz. There’s no way I could justify spending $10-$15 dollars every two weeks when I can do it myself in under 5 minutes with no problems. ---

I went chromium cranium almost exactly a year ago. I saw a picture of me and my once-glorious-now-in-full-gallup-retreat hairline, and decided if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em. I don’t look great, but I look a lot better. Even my mom, who was flabbergasted (sp?) when she first saw it, began to find it not-so-bad by evening’s end. I think she’s got no problems at all with it now. (Dad liked it from the start.) And as for women, I will generally describe myself with the line: “No wife. No kids. No hair.” Gets a smile or more every time. Routine: Electric Norelco razor (with 'Lectric Shave or like product, optional) once every 2 to 4 days, followed by a blade on the top where it’s thinnest – and puts up the least resistance! I do the blade part in the shower when I shave my beard. Tip: Having a good tan up there helps. I noticed that in the dead of winter, when my head was very pale, I looked more like a chemo patient than the sex god I aspire to be. ---

I think long pubic hair is disgusting. Cut that stuff short. What? Pubic was never mentioned?!? Oh… :o ---

I don’t cut my own hair. But I tell the barber to cut it to the height of her fingers. (3/4 of inch?) Just long enough so it won’t spike, and I always tell her ‘tapered’. I think it look niceer that way. I only have to get it cut once a month or even less frequently. I haven’t used a comb in years. It’s worth it to me to pay a barber just to straighten up my sideburns and make the back of my head look nice and trimmed. ---
