It’s on the counter in the tiny powder room which you almost never use except that time last week when you were making a stew and had to make a sudden quick trip in between adding the tomatoes and the turnips. You set it down, went, returned to the kitchen and completely forgot all about it. This is also why that stew was never quite right. Or anyway, that’s what it was when it happened to me. ---

I remember putting a pepper mill and a salt mill away about 10 months ago. My husband had bought them and we were splitting up, so I thought I’d get these out of my sight. When I packed his stuff several months later, I didn’t find them. They are about 15 inches high, Peugeot is the brand, and they look like these (only twice as tall)[http://www.metrokitchen.com/product/PG-825DAMANSET](http://www.metrokitchen.com/product/PG-825DAMANSET) . They must have run away to avoid the atmosphere around here. Maybe they are plotting against us… The Rise of the Rogue Pepper Mills. Better band name than story title. ---

Do you have an open staircase with bannisters that you set it on? When I picture tall pepper mills (and yes, I checked the OP as well), I always think they look like bannisters). If you set it there for some reason (had to answer the door while it was in your hand) it would probably blend in pretty nicely. ---

I’m missing a salt grinder – part of a matched set with my pepper mill. It’s been missing since the maids came a couple months ago. I doubt they stole it (who steals salt?), but they’re infamous for “relocating” things under the guise of “putting them away.” There’s a sort of pivoting drawer thing under my sink that I didn’t even know existed until I accidentally pulled it open one day. It was full of stuff the maids had put there. But the salt grinder (a foot high, and equally hard to miss) is still missing, so at least your pepper mill will have a date. ---

Do you live with your SO but tell your mother that they are just a platonic roommate? And did your mother recently come for dinner? If so, look under the pillow in your spare bedroom. Your mother put the pepper mill there to see if s/he is really sleeping in there. ---

LOL two of my friends use the same lady for house cleaning and they refer to this as being Elizabeth’d. ie, I don’t know where my pepper mill is, it was Elizabeth’d last Tuesday and I haven’t found it yet. ---
