How to calm a puppy

is there a pets mart or large pet store near you? they usually have pet training classes.

if y’all have cable the animal planet usually has shows on dog training. i am partial to the monks of new skete.

don’t forget to knit up some sweaters for the little woofy.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that your dog be on-leash at all times when outside a fence. A leash when oustside is like a seat belt when driving on the highway – a lifesaving tool. Other dogs, cars, broken glass, rat poison, strangers – your lil’ guy doesn’t understand the hazards out there!

The best way to calm down a puppy is exercise. Find a place or a way to run the little devil…with his human(s), of course. A tired dog is a happy dog!

I’ve also heard that eliminating corn from the diet can help – supposedly it turns into sugar and makes them more hyper. Read your labels.

This is what worked for us: playing fetch until we were thoroughly bored of it, then playing for another half hour or so. We don’t have pugs, but I still think you’ll be amazed at what fatigue can do for doggie behavior. Of course, obedience classes aren’t going to hurt either.

(Our Australian Shepherd is still out of action until March, and, missing her usual hour or so of fetch, she’s found all sorts of things to do. I may have to kill her, so I can sympathize.)

“Crate”! is actually the one command she’s mastered. Sit and Stay just depend on how ornery she feels.
