I know it’s delusional, but I can’t help thinking it does have a small effect - for years I’d get two credit card offers from Citibank every month (I’m not a customer). About a year after I began stuffing the fine print cardholder terms sheet into the prepaid envelope and returning that, Citibank started leaving a cutout address window in the envelope that lined up with a pre-printed mailing address on the credit card application, which already had my name on it. I don’t think I’m the only one who was doing this, and maybe it was collectively irritating or costly to somebody that they made the change. For a while, I cut out the address and taped it to the inside of the envelope, but quit doing that some time before they stopped sending applications.
