Sincerely sounds too formal. “Love” is out of the question. I have no idea how to close a letter to an ex-girlfriend.

How should I end it?

I would lean towards “sincerely.” While I don’t consider it formal, is formality a problem in this situation? The more formal closings are “sincerely yours” and “yours truly,” and while the word “yours” in these really is a formality, I would reflect upon how it would be perceived by an ex.

“Regards,”

“With Affection,”

“See you soon,”

Whatever – you can end a letter with just about anything, as long as it stands well by itself and doesn’t piss off the recipient.

Could you not just sign your name? Seems the easiest option if you want to avoid pissing off the recipient, as **Nametag** suggested.

“P.S. I have herpes and now, so do you.”

but that’s just me and my odd sense of humor.

Seriously if you are still friends why write a letter? I mean of the two ex’s I’m still friends with I just talk to them on the phone and as friends I’m as informal as with anyone.

If she isn’t a friend anymore why bother to write a letter unless it’s for legal reasons like to inform her you are terminating any joint accounts or whatnot?

If you are feeling hurt don’t write the letter period. Wait a while, get an intermediary if you need one, but don’t communicate directly until you are over it. It’s just a mistake that will either piss her off or make you look like a loser or feel like begging. All bad ideas. The cooler you are now the more likely you can use this as as a future reference when getting involved with a new person. Most women really appreciate a guy who is close still a good friend to his ex’s, it shows maturity and that you are a really worthwhile person.

Whenever I run into a problem like this I simply sign my name and leave it at that. With that method you don’t have to worry about slights or the mis-intended comment.

I find that “Fondly” is a great closer. It’s more personal than “sincerely,” and is warm without extending to “love”

Fondly,

Cranky

Erm, well I guess I meant email.

She moved to a different town, so calling her would cost long distance money.

I guess it depends more on the content of the email in general. Most emails are pretty informal, if it’s just chitchat, use what you would you normally say if you were parting from her in person…
I normally just end with “Cheers” or “Cya”.

Why would you write “cover your ass” to an ex?:o

sincerely seems, well, something my grandparents might say to an ex. I would vote for the “take care” if you want a bit of warmth but nothing that could be misconstrued. emails tend to be more informal anyway, so just your name at the end wouldn’t be out of line.

Close it with this:

> Years from now, when you’re no better off than when you started, when it finally hits you that it’s all been nothing but a wasted lie, think of me. Think of me, ex-girlfriend, and when you do, realize that I was the only beacon of logic and truth in this sad menagerie. You seem predestined for failure, however, so I doubt there is anything one can do for you. Just remember, when the joy is gone, when you’re clawing at the boundaries of your little world, you always had a choice.
