How to do the impossible? (i.e. how to get my cat to eat a pill)

I’ve been pilling our cat for 13 years. I put him on his back, open his mouth, and throw the pill down the back of his throat. Hold his mouth shut until he swallows.

He’s actually pretty good about it. He tries to spit it out, but never scratches.

Really? The cat I had needed both liquid and pills. The pills were infinitely easier to get into him than the liquid. I put the liquid in a syringe kinda thing and pushed it into the back of his throat. Unless I held his head in a death grip, he’d then shake furiously and spray the liquid all over a 3 foot circle around him. Not fun.

Pills are a breeze compared to liquid IMO.

My last cat was great with pills (I would put them in treats and she’d eat them - sometimes if the pill fell out of the treat, she would eat the pill off the floor, thinking it was part of the treat) but was terrible with liquids. She’d always freak out and vomit it back up.

Another strategy that is harder to come by due to pharmacy abilities - gel. It’s basically a little syringe of lotion that you squeeze out 1ml and rub inside the cat’s ear. My cat had no problem with that at all, didn’t even notice.
