I’m looking for a lawyer for something in Northern Kentucky. It’s for a relatively uncommon issue, but most general lawyers should be able to handle it. However, I have no idea how to find a reliable lawyer. I feel like picking one out of the phone book is dumb, and I work in Ohio so none of my co-workers (all of whom live on the Ohio side) are likely to be able to recommend someone.

What’s the best way to go about this?

You could try calling the [Kentucky Bar Association](http://www.kybar.org/) and asking for a referral – I believe most every state’s bar provides that service.

That’s more useful than the phone book. Thanks!

An old friend of mine in that area is married to a lawyer (who I think may have since become a judge). Let me know by PM if you need a more directed referral.

You could also use [Martindale-Hubbell](http://www.martindale.com/) , which good lawyers themselves take seriously. An “AV” rating is the best one. They have a search feature by city and type of practice.
