How to fix a television

I have been working on TVs since I was a kid in the 50s. I have seen someone do the shorting out trick a few times. Very scary. Hence, I have never tried this myself. A novice should be strongly disuaded from attempting this.

There are safer ways of discharging a set given in the Repair FAQ.

Uh, ftg, as I’ve also been working on Tvs since I was a kid (but in the 70s), I’m surprised at your comment that shorting the flyback is very scary even amongst professionals, so much so that you’ve never tried it yourself.

Looking over the site you provided, they also seem to recommend that, though some talk about doing it through a big resistor.

Frankly, I know of no alternative; the charge has to be disipated. Everyone I know in the industry does this. What technique do you use? I mean you have to make sure there’s no charge before working on it. You don’t let the set sit a few days or something do you?

Sounds like you should just go buy a new TV.

I did not say I was a pro. I am just an experienced amateur. I have seen the discharge thing done by a pro.

I base my response to questions such as in the OP at the level of the OP’s possible expertise. This poster seems particularly naive so I have posted very high cautions.

Advice to a pro is obviously not going to be the as for an inexperienced DIYer.

I think suggesting to a novice this discharge technique is not a real good idea.
