How to get a cat to eat?

Hmm, I can’t really get on board with using more drugs just because it has a side effect of appetite stimulant. I think that if they don’t know what is going on then riding it out with force feeding is a lot more appropriate - though I am sure the vet will be happy to try (read: sell) a bunch of them.

If the cat won’t eat it, I might!

Good luck, BakerKitteh.

What does “kitteh” mean versus “kitty”, by the way. I’m hearing in my mind a little kid who really likes a pet cat saying “kitteh…” (like it sounds)

I think it’s pretty much that. Just another affectionate term for your cat.

kitteh is “Kitty” in Interwebs-kittyspeak. It started here: I Can Has Cheezburger? - Page 2874 - Funny Animals Online - Cheezburger

Right.
Babyfood chicken, mixed with milk, then a plastic largebore eyedropper.

I think Baker has turned a corner! Tonight Bill offered Baker his favorite treats and Baker walked away from them, but after I gave Baker a few fingerfuls of the Rescue food, he went over and ATE a couple of treats.

He didn’t eat all of them, but at least he volunterly put food in his mouth and swallowed it. He’s showing signs of grooming and he’s feeling well enough to try to run away when I come at him with the food.

Poor boy is still sneezing, but not as much, and sounds very snotty, but he actually ate on his own!!!

Of course, this doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop shoving food into him. Feeling well enough to crunch up a couple of treats doesn’t mean that I trust him to eat enough to keep his weight up, but man oh man, I am so happy right now.
SeaDragonTattoo I think you might have upset our vet. He didn’t know this And finally, as to the antibiotics, Convenia is cefovecin and Clavamox is amoxicillin with clavulanic acid added to it. So they’re not the same per se, but they’re both broad spectrum and I’ve yet to see a doctor prescribe them together. He sounded pretty offended when I told him that I wanted to stop the clavamox and use something else because of online advice.

To his credit, he did some research and called me back (sounding pretty embarrassed) and agreed to dispense some Baytril.

Thanks everyone for the support and kind wishes. I know that this isn’t over yet, Baker has a way to go, but yesterday I was pretty sure that we were going to lose our furface and today I think that there is hope.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!

I’m so happy!!! Yay!
Hey, Baker! Blue and The Dark One say, keep it up, Buddy!

Great update, so happy to hear. I just finished my day at work by blow drying a pile of rabies certificates that fell into a bowl of water. This made my night so much better!

It’s been my observation that Sea Dragon Tattoo knows her stuff. So glad Baker’s now on Baytril, and of course that he’s feeling better!

You aren’t limited to baby food and veterinary food for feeding him. This works best with a pate: empty a can into a bowl, add some water, and use a stick blender to puree’ it. Some foods have pieces that will get stuck in the syringe, so test it in the bowl before you try testing it on Baker. I had a lot of trouble with a veterinary kidney food (KD) having little hard chunks in it. Most of the Fancy Feast (I know, I know) pates worked well.

Keep in mind that he might develop food aversion to whatever you use due to associating it with the bad experience. So don’t use his favorite food, but of course not anything he hates, either.

Good luck!

Wonders if I want to ask about that. Thinks about it and realized there was probably a critter involved.

Baker still isn’t eating more than a couple of treats and I haven’t seen signs that he’s eating his kibble.

Baker doesn’t really like canned food. I tried him on some Friskies today and he walked away, so he is still getting hand fed. He’s looking MUCH better though, I really do think he’s going to make it.

Happy news!

I’ve run into this attitude a couple of times with vets, too. I know that they’re the experts in cat care, but I’m the expert in MY cat, and I don’t always think they give that any value.

Anyway, glad to hear the little fuzzybutt has turned the corner!

Yay, Baker!

Hah. Yes. Critter indeed. I was trying to weigh them for mailing to the county when someone decided to visit with me by jumping onto the postage machine, swiping the certs off and the lot of them sailed into a water bowl on the floor that should have been on the window sill. Oh well. They dried pretty easily.

Here’s hoping your guy decides to start chowing on his own soon. I know you won’t really feel like he’s out of the woods until he does. The treats are certainly a start, but yeah, the hand feeding can really take its toll fairly quickly. I had to do that with Chico and with his k/d food since that’s a prescription food and he can’t really get anything with “normal” protein due to his liver shunt. We got through the worst of his pancreatitis, and seems to have finally subsided after more than a year. He hasn’t felt the same about eating his canned food since, and really just wants kibble, which isn’t as good for him either. Dangit.

Its amazing how fast Baker has come back now that he’s getting better. He still sounds like a snotty 2-year old kid, I seriously want to grab him by the back of his head, hold a tissue to his nose and say “BLOW”, but he’s eating again. I know that the only reason he’s eating again is because of the drugs.

Tonight he ate 2 handfuls of cheap kibble and some Fancy Feast, then went back to where I had put the cheap kibble and sniffed around so I gave him another handful and he ate most of it.

Lucky, who is in lock-up with Baker, has never had a problem eating. Lucky got better the day after he got his convenia and has been bouncing around and eating whatever I put in front of his face, will now start wanting Happy Meals all the time too.

The rest of our pride are all fine, so I’m happy. I’ll deal with the cheap kibble problem later.

Yay! I’m so glad!

Cheap kibble is better than no kibble! I’m so glad he’s eating!

So, if I may ride along my cat eats but she doesn’t eat enough. She’s down to 4.5 lbs :frowning: She was at the vet for fluids, vitamins and appetite stimulants earlier this week. She also got kitty Pepcid for home. While she’s eating more, it’s not a lot more. I put down 3.5 oz of a dry food she likes, and she hasn’t finished it in three days (although clearly she’s eating it… previously she would eat approx 10 kibbles per day and a couple bites of wet so there IS an improvement but… I have get more calories into my cat.

She’s rejected Cat-sure (don’t totally blame her, it smells like a steak & ice cream milkshake) and Hills a/d, she’s rejected the crappy wet food she previously liked (fancy feast) and every major good quality brand (wellness; science diet; max cat; eukanuba; pro plan … In every flavor). She walks away from baby food, liverwurst, and even tuna after a couple cursory licks. She’s never had any interest in cheese.

We’re no longer able to dose her with her thyroid meds because we can no longer hide the pill (here again is a long list of tried-&-failed products) and she fights us, hard, to the point where she coughs/gasps for air, during manual dosing and I’m worried she’s going to have a heart attack (she has a moderate murmur). (The vet knows she’s not getting her thyroid pills atm).

I don’t know. I’m at wits end with this.

Eta: the dry food she’s willing to eat is Science diet Natures Best, so it’s a decent food in itself. But she’s not eating anywhere near the recommended amount (slightly less than 1/2 cup for a 5lb cat).

She had previously nibbled-at-for-a-bit-then-gave-up-on, eukanuba dry and max cat dry.
