How about dog food? I like bacon, KFC and chocolate too much to give those to a mouse. I’ve got some canned dog food that’s got bacon in it … of course the dogs really like that too … might have to stick with dry.
DAVEW0071, I discovered the KFC entirely by accident - the mice in my apartment will try to chew through garbage cans to get at the scraps that I’ve left.
CnoteChris I still prefer freezing them… it does seem a peaceful way to go, if you beleive the human reports. I’ve seen too many mice dragging around a snap-trap that caught them on a leg, obviously panicked and in pain, especially if they were caught when I wasn’t home. Ditto for glue traps. Plus, you often have to go find where the mouse dragged itself and the trap, and pull it out of the hole it is trying to get down but can’t due to having a trap on its leg. All in all, I prefer the live traps.
If killing mice is bad karma, I’m doomed. I work with mice in the lab, and I kill several a day (instantly, of course).
And not that I’d expect you to know, but for the record, I’m female.

Really? The snaps I use usually catch them right behind the head. Snapped spine, instant oblivion. No pain. I’ve seen live ones caught on glueboards, but never a snap-trap.
romansperson, dog food would probably work. Bread would probably work, too, as would cheese. Problem is, the latter two dry out too quickly. That’s another reason why I use peanut butter. Even when it dries out, the mice find it attractive. Whatever you use, keep in mind that mice do a lot of their navigating by smell. Peanut butter’s aroma is a big draw.
