I have a friend who has never burped. Soda does it for me. I can’t make myself burp; if I try, I vomit. That’s less than desirable.

I’ll second this. When I was in my twenties I had symptoms like your boyfriend. Took visiting 4 doctors until I was diagnosed properly. It was a hiatal hernia, commonly known as reflux. It’s easily controlled. I guess it took a few years and a little weight loss, but mine eventually went away.
