I should have been clearer in my post. DEFINITELY ask. Just because the owner is your friend, doesn’t mean he or she will let you hunt, and they might have rules to obey, such as stay out of the west pasture, because the bull there will try kill you if he gets a chance. (Been there…)
Remember a .22LR can travel 1 1/2 miles. always know where you are aiming the rifle.
Therefore a shotgun is a much safer firearm for shooting game in a tree.
But then remember, a shotgun is more deadly at short range in the event of an accident.
In the old days of muzzle loading rifles, the shooter would bark the squirrel. Hitting the limb under it would stun it and then it would be dispatched like an animal in a trap and no meat would be lost.
And save the brains for tanning the hide;)
